Scientific American has an interesting piece on online dating.

Quote:
About two years ago I arranged to meet for coffee with a woman I had corresponded with online. I arrived early and sat at a table in a conspicuous spot. After a few minutes, a woman came to my table, sat down and said with big smile, "Hi, I'm Chris!"

But Chris was not the woman in the online photos. This wasn't a question of an age discrepancy or a new hairdo. She was a completely different woman. Chris was in marketing, you see, and to her it was simply a good strategy to post photographs that would draw in as many "customers" as possible. I never said a word about the photos. I just enjoyed our conversation and the refreshments. A few weeks later I noticed that Chris had replaced the photos with those of yet another woman.

Qinella, you know what epithet rhymes with the username blynch?
I'll give you a hint. It means female dog. As far as Svetlana, saying that Americans are liars because of a phony person on-line sounds funny considering Russia lots of that.

hahaha!!! What jobs do MOST Russian girls have here??? Hint: It sure isn't teaching Russian, if you get my drift. I met two Russian girls who giggled when I asked them what their jobs were...They said "We're dancers". Yeah, right! I ran ino them in a bar in Cheongdam-dong with their Korean boyfriends.

My brother met his current girlfriend online (turns out she goes at the same university he does, same major, different class). His trick is that he stuck with people who lived near him and didn't spend more than a week chatting before he met them in person since he was looking for something more than an internet buddy.
