I guess we'll find out when/if other posters using different ISPs post here saying they got contacted as well.

My cable company seems really reluctant to mail me last months bill for some reason. Maybe they are cutting me off!

If they don't want me downloading TV shows, they'd better damn well make sure they broadcast the shows the night they're released. I'm not going to wait half a year (or forever) to see a show that's out now. Same goes for movies.

Here's my guess as to what's going on here. This is just a guess.

As a favor to another company here, KT is calling some of their customers to warn them about illegal downloads.

They can only guess who's doing this by detecting download and upload speeds coming from certain IP's. They have no idea what's being downloaded or uploaded to and from each IP. However, if they can detect certain download speeds, it's a good guess that something copyrighted is being downloaded.

This is why the warnings are vague. To prove that you've downloaded something illegal, you would have to be pretty much caught red handed. A knock on your door by police and seizure of your hard drive might do this.

Considering that millions of people in Korea do this, I'll wait until I hear actual stories of people being sued or something before I even begin to get worried.

This is where you are wrong, i worked for an ISP, and we knew EXACTLY what customers were downloading.

ummmm ok yeah like they are gonna come knocking on my door anytime soon!!!

or maybe they are just targeting foreigners so they can blame illegal downloading on foreigners!

give me a break!!

I'd say take it one step further and remove P2P from your computer. I haven't downloaded much at all over the last couple of years.

The thing is that illegal copies of movies are for sale all over Seoul. My wife happened to walk by one this evening that was selling copies of Rocky Balboa (which isn't coming out until next week here in Korea). Until they totally crack down on that end, they are fighting a losing battle.

Look, it's no "foreigner conspiracy" or some other reason to bash the country. I got caught downloading a fake torrent, the IPs were harvested (by a US company) and forwarded to the appropriate ISPs. They called (the internet is in my wife's name; they didn't know a foreigner was doing the downloading) and asked us politely to not engage in that kind of activity anymore.

The fact is that I wasn't first, knowledgeable about BitTorrent, and second, not protecting my privacy because I thought as The Cube thinks; that I was a needle in a haystack and nothing would happen.

Well, nothing will come of this because I will protect myself online and I now know enough about the Torrent network to become a much more difficult target to hit. That, and I won't be doing much in terms of downloading, and will most assuredly switch ISPs.

Not necessary. Most computers in Korea probably have illegitimate software on them, so they aren't going door-to-door. The only reason they would come to my house is to pick me up if I ignored a subpoena. This will not happen for reasons I have stated and others that don't need to be.

The bottom line is that downloading without really knowing about anonymity on the BT network, how to identify fake trackers and monitoring the connections to and from your computer carefully is asking for trouble.

No, they may never get you or be interested in you. Protecting yourself isn't being paranoid, it's being practical. When engaging in illegal activities, one should be aware of the possible consequences that may arise from those activities. Even here in Korea one should act as they are; guilty, albeit in an odd, I-don't-feel-like-a-bad-guy way. The current laws seem so distant; I too have trouble seeing them in realistic terms, as I do running traffic signals or assault, for example.

They are just files to me; digital information distributed on widely avaliable software on a network that hasn't been deemed illegal. Hard to find your way in that kind of permissive environment, but there you have it. You have the net, the network and the files layed out in front of you, but accessing them is a no-no. A good metaphor for many struggles in life I suppose.

Anyhow...be careful folks.

Loophole?

I am currently using my neighbours internet (obviously, without their knowledge...ok, I am crashing at my in-laws'...so it is their neighbours). I am DL several movies...

I can't get caught this way...which leads me to think: how can I be prosecuted if I leave my router unencrypted at my house? I mean, I didn't DL the schtuff...but since my router is not locked, maybe my neighbour(s) did?

Meh, I don't care.

!shoosh,

Ryst

I'm involved with the music business and I'm routinely downloading and uploading enourmous files of copyrighted material provided to me by the artist or record company. How the heck will they know the permission status of my files?

Sounds to me like this is like trying to intercept every cell phone call.. they'll be so swamped with data that they'll never be able to procss it all.

Since when does Korean care about intellectual property law? That's the amazing thing about all this!
