KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Malaysia's health ministry is considering a ban on fast-food advertisements because the meals they promote are considered "silent killers", the Star newspaper reported on Saturday.

The move would also cover endorsements of events linked to fast food, Health Minister Chua Soi Lek was quoted as saying.

A fast-food "sin tax" was also being considered, he said, adding that the proposal was motivated by the increasing number of Malaysians suffering from diseases of the "affluent" such as diabetes and hypertension.

"We want to send a strong signal to consumers. We do not allow advertising for cigarettes and liquor. Fast food should be treated in the same way as alcohol," he said.

They could start by cutting out the Palm oil on everything.

I eat malay food almost every day. It isn't significanly more healthy than fast food, though it can be much more delicious. Lumbu (sweet beef) is my personal favorite. A big difference is that they drink tea with their food and not soda, and that might account for any differences. The food just isn't that healthy.

This is just anti-Western claptrap.

My doctor lists "soda" with tobacco and alcohol as unhealthy habits on the form you fill out when you start seeing him.

Oh yeah, (insert anti-globalization rant here).
I don't know about Malaysian food. I can't imagine it's worse than McD's.

As an aside, for those of you with too much time on your hands:

If you ever make your way into SE Asia, I'd seek it out. In my opinion, it is better in Singapore than in Malaysia (in Singapore the Malay food is less strong tasting), but it is delicious either way.
