So in email exchanges with Koreans I've noticed a bunch of different symbols and emoticons. I've managed to find out what most mean from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticon#East_Asian_style But i still haven't found out what ~ means. It's used between words, at the end of sentences etc. Any ideas?

I had it explained to me by an American who adapted it as giving a sense of happiness, like dragging your hand through someone's hair and not wanting to let go.

They annoy me when they're used in place of actual punctuation.

It's called a tilda... and I always thought that it meant "approximately".

I've also seen it used for "to". Like in "8 to 10 servings".

He's asking about the way Koreans use it~~

Like that.

It adds a lighthearted feeling.

I got a professional copy of a transcript from an SBS TV show and, even in the transcript they use the tilda (in the place of punctuation). Example passage:

이게.. 방금 본 그 단호박 영양밥입니다~~
색이 너무 예뻐요~~

Here's a funny line:

그러니까.. 밤하고 감이 궁합이 잘 맞는다는 소리네~~??

Two tildas.. TWO questions marks. Laughing

I thought it's also used to draw out a word, or add emphasis.

In english we would say something like "I reeaaallly like that"

Korean's can use the ~ usually at the end of a sentence, or even just a single word like 안녕~~~

I use it all the time when I send text messages in Korean or when chatting. I just use it instead of a period. I've just realized that I never use it when texting my English speaking friends~
