I was at consulate in Bangkok yesterday and for whatever reason the security guard decided to tell me and my wife that she would only be able to stay in Korea on a holiday visa for three months because she hadn't taken my name.

I asked the lady behind the counter and she said it went by the marriage certificate which is what I thought.

So what is the deal? We don't see any need for her to have my name and it also would mean a lot of hassle changing the deeds on her land banks houses etc.

Any ideas

I don't listen to security guards when they tell me to sort my trash. I pretty much would ignore them when it comes to immigration advice.

Ahh the incompetence of Korean consulates. I got into a shouting match with one woman at the Sydney consulate in 2005 because she flat out did not know her job. Not helpful, I know, but I had someone from my University ring them and tell her what she had to do. If you are applying for the dependent spousal visa, try for the 12 months anyhow, since the lackey was just a rent-a-cop. If you only get three months, I am pretty sure you can extend once you are in the country. Hope it all works out for you.

In Korea, women do not change their name when they get married. I don't see how they could complain if some foreign women also do not change their name when they get married.

I don't share my husband's name and I'm here on an F3 visa - no problems whatsoever.

Thanks.

The missus being the missus saw me getting riled with the security guard and pulled me away before I got to grill him.

It's a shitty thing to do telling somebodies wife that they can only stay for a couple of months because we have different names.

What about having children with a Korean; do they take the father's name usually? or is it one of those Johnson-Lee deals?

LOL. Children belong to the father in Korea. They take the father's name.
