You must either:
a)Depart Korea by midnight of the last day indicated on your ARC
b)Obtain an extension of stay
c)Overstay your visa and become an illegal alien and subject to a fine (100k won) and blackmark on your immigration file.
If you have your airticket you can get a FREE extension (officially up to 10 days) simply by going to the immigration office with your ticket, your ARC, your passport and filling in the application form.
The 2 week after thing is: If your employment is terminated BEFORE the expiry date on your ARC you legally have 14 days to exit the country.

Actually, you can get up to 30 days with a ticket in hand. I've had three 4-week extentions. |

That's why I said officially... my last extension like that was 16 days but the official rule book says 10 days.
Heaven forbid he may actually get someone who read the book and follows policy... stranger things have happened. |

Ttompatz,
Here's a quick question for you since you seem to be the man in the know regarding visa extensions . My contract will expire on the 31st March but my visa doesn't expire until 13th April. I'm currently looking for a new job to start around the beginning of April but in order for my *new* hagwon to start the visa application I'll have to cancel my old visa. Am I right thus far? If I go to immigration will they allow me to cancel my visa and then give me an extension? How long will I get?
Thanks! |

When your visa is cancelled you will be given an exit order and required to depart the country within 14 days. You can return on the next flight back but you will have had to leave the country.
A better plan is get an LOR from your current boss and get your visa transfered to your new job and then extended.
Officially known as a change or addition of workplace on the application form.
It is a bit of pissing around and may take a day to get it all sorted out but only costs 60k for the change and 30k for the extension and will save you the time and costs of the visa run. |

I called Immigration in Seoul and talked to an English woman in a call center who put both mine and my son's info in at diff times and told me that if we had our ticket confirmation we could get a free 30-day extension.
This was just last week when I called, and I called back a day later and got the same info about a 30-day extension without charge with the e-confirmation. |
Apples and oranges. Visa expiration and E2 visa cancellation. |

Get the hell out! There's a RULE BOOK??? Never would've thunk it with the way every office makes up their own rules as they go along. |

So let me get this straight, you're saying that even though I will have finished my contract and have just two weeks remaining on my E2 Visa, I can actually get my visa transferred over to my *new* hagwon and then extended for a year thus saving myself a visa run to Japan?
But why would I need an LOR if my job has already finished? I don't need to be released from my contract because it will have been completed by then. This is the part I'm confused about. Would it still be possible to transfer my visa and have it extended to my next hagwon? |

Your old boss is still responsible for you if you are on the E2 that was issued to enable you to work for them.
You need to have the visa canceled even though your contract is completed.
The easiest way is an LOR and change employers but you can just cancel the visa and then do a visa run. |

If I were in your position, what I would do is arrange to start my new job on April 14. That way there can be no immigration complications. Go on vacation for the first 2 weeks of April (Thailand is nice) and pick up your new visa at the Korean embassy before you come back and start your new job. |
