I renewed my contract at my school. They took my ARC and passport to immigration and brought it back with no marks at all in my passport and a little writing (in Korean) on the back on my ARC that says its extended.
Am I really supposed to have nothing in my passport that says that I still have a vaild visa for this country? Can this get me into problems when I go on vacation? |

Yes, your VISA has been extended. The date on the back of your ARC is now the last day you can stay in Korea. If you want to leave on vacation, you will need to visit immi and get a re-entry permit. To get that, you'll just need your passport, ARC, and some cash. I'm pretty sure you can get it done at Incheon, but you may want to do it at your local office.

My visa was a multiple entry visa. So the extension is not automatically multiple entry? |

Are you a Brit? This is the case for them (you). Americans get a stamp in their passport as well as writing on the card. We also have to pay for the multi-entry. Did your boss pay for the visa? |

True but they have to ask for it when getting the visa done otherwise thay are usually made to pay for it. |

No, because your visa was not extended at all. Only your sojourn was extended. (The document you filled out at immigration is called "Extension of Sojourn.") Your visa is what you use to get into Korea, and your sojourn is permission to stay and work here under the terms of your status (E-2). So with the extension of sojourn, you have permission to stay and work in Korea for another year, but your visa (for entering) has expired, which means you no longer have permission to enter Korea.
If you want to re-enter (ie. if you go on vacation), as kprrok said, you need to get a re-entry permit stamped in your passport. I think it costs 30,000W for a single re-entry (if you only plan on doing one trip this contract) or 50,000W for a multi. A lot of people do this at the same time as getting their ARC renewed to save time, but you can go back anytime to do this. |

J.B. is correct.
I found that I could buy it at the immigration booth at the airport, but they advised me to get it at the immigration office beforehand next time.
Went through exactly what you are now. |

Yeah, my boss went to immi last year and got the doodles on the back of my ARC and the stamp in my passport.
Sounds like your boss was being cheap. He should pay for that stamp. |

Thanks for the advice. Suppose I should go to figure it out. I'm pretty sure I don't have time to go to immigration (working the long vacation schedule) so I am probably going to have to go with talking to immigration at Incheon when I leave. |

I went to immigration in Suwon today. I definitely wanted a multiple entry stamp this time because I ended up making three trips out of Korea last year, and each time I was delayed at the Incheon airport for up to twenty-five minutes and charged 30,000 won for a single-entry (you can't get multiple entry at the airport...)
I thought that the 50,000 won multiple entry stamp fee would be all that I had to pay, but I also had to pay 30,000 won for the extension of sojourn - so the total was 80,000 won (and I barely had enough bus and taxi fare to get back to my apartment...) |

Yes, that is normal. The extension of soujourn and re-entry permit have separate fees because the re-entry permit is not required during the renewal process. |
