I'm not familiar with the in's and out's of the Talk contract, so my advice is based on the GEPIK contract (you'd want to check your own contract to see if this matches up).
1. You have to give 2 months notice. If you do so now, you'll be out of here in the beginning of Jan. If you give the required notice and stick it out, all monies paid by you (i.e. Housing deposit) will be refunded.
2. Airfare, if you pass the 6month mark, you WONT be liable to pay back the airfare.
Based on this, best course of action is to hand in your notice ASAP, ride out the next 2 months and go home (you will have to buy your own ticket though). |

talk orientation
I am not really into the teaching thing, maybe an assistant teacher but not the head teacher. |
For the love of Pete. They are telling the TALK program people that they will be assistants then pulling the rug out from under them and forcing them to lead classes??? For some reason I thought they would be real assistants. |

I believe I read on their website that the people are teachers not assistants, no rug pulling involved (not that I know of). |

If you want to leave and be nice about it, give your notice and leave.
If the situation is, in your mind, untenable just leave at your convenience.
They will not stop you at the airport and force you to return to work.
Your co-teacher on the other hand will try everything in the book to cajole or coerce you into staying. Don't buy it. You are free to leave anytime and for any reason.

Could you please discuss a little bit more your reasons for leaving? I ask because I have a friend who might be interested in replacing you for the final 6 months.
Was the experience with your school negative or just different from what you were hoping for? Did they provide you a good apartment, and did they pay everything in the contract on time - salary, settlement, etc?
Would you recommend your current life & job to another person who is interested in teaching classes the same way I do in GEPIK (i.e. 80/20 me/co-teacher)? |

Well to be perfectly honest. Everything has been great I was a little worried at first about the talk program being new and all but I have been impressed with my school and I love my apartment. The kids are great except for a few that are a little disrespectful 5&6 graders and a little crazy 1&2 graders butI think that is probably the case with all schools. The currency thing has me a little worried and I miss the states and my family and freinds but other that that its been great. Teaching wise for me I feel that I have to much responsiblity as a head teacher of my class. I would feel better as a assisstant teacher. Also I keep wanting to speak Japanese but can't because its Korea not Japan. I have been trying to learn Korean but its been hard trying to learn another language. I think I would do alot better with something like the JET programme in Japan. Still planning on doing that when I graduate. As far a pay goes everything has been on time and great. I am suprised how cheap utilites are here compared to back home and its nice not having to pay rent. As it goes for my co-teacher I pretty much do all the lesson plans and she helps me out in class and management of the class and helps me if I need help with something outside of class. So yeah I would recommend it to somebody who is interested. I just wish i would of signed a 6 month contract instead of a year and everything would of been great. :D |
Wow, it sounds like you've had a good run. Thank you for taking the time to describe your work situation.
May I ask in which city your are working? Do you think it would be possible for my friend to replace you specifically, and not just get thrown into the shuffle for schools? |

I heard that the TALK program purposefully over-hired, expecting to lose a fair number of people early on.
As has been your experience so far, if you are honest and allow them fair time to adjust, things should go smoothly.
Now, just to see if you get your final pay. I wouldn't be worried about it as much as if I were working at a hagwon, anyway. |

Does anyone know the actual turnover rate for foreign teachers in this country? I heard that 50% of people leave within three months. Koreans dismiss this as all foreign teachers being screwballs. They may at some point want to take a look at their employee retention strategies. |

Anyone know why the OP wants this post deleted? That's a little unusual. |
