....if your country needed you to?
Because I've just finished reading Scott Turow's 'Ordinary Heroes' and his harrowing accounts based on true stories of life in the trenches have really convinced me (if I needed any more convincing) that the answer to that question for me is a resounding NO!
40 million people killed between the years of 1937-1945!
For what? |

I have, and would again, if I weren't old and decrepit.
No judgement call from me on those who differ.
That lifestyle and mindset isn't for everyone. |

Dammit, mole, I wanna drink with you some day. That's the best and most accurate answer to the question I would ever have expected to hear from anyone ...
Thank you, sir. |

A big fat NO for me too.
I'm not keen on the idea of being killed or maimed, and even less so on the idea of killing or maiming someone else.
Still if it was my an invasion and family, friends and country are in jeopardy I'd be more inclined. But I'm too much of a cynic to rely on a politician to decide I'm needed in another country, miles from home, in a conflict over who gets to make the money. |

Damn you, Mole.
I was really hoping for 8 pages of baiting and condescension. |

I've been damned twice in a short thread!
Gotta love The Bobster. We've connected a few times here over the years.
Sincinnatislink: (no glasses) I think you'll get your wish. This is one of those controversial type threads. |

I would if my home country (Canada) were a fully free one, but it isn't; it's semi-free.
I would be willing to fight for any government that truly recognizes individual rights and leaves its citizens alone to do what they want provided they don't directly harm anyone else, but the fact is that Canada is an incredibly huge nanny/welfare state with an ever-increasingly large bureaucracy.
Who would be willing to fight for a mixed economy with no ideology and no consistent principles?
PS My apologies in advance if this derails the thread- it's not my intention. |

Only if my country were invaded...and ONLY on my shore.
I did my time in the Navy, and I was part of Grenada ('83) and got my Expeditionary Medal for that, but all I did was sit on the ship and watch the fireworks from a distance. Beirut, Lebanon a few months before or after - can't remember - when the Marine barracks were blown up...again off the coast on a ship watching the whole thing from a distance. |

I want you in my foxhole.
But I'm thinking, when I joined a fraternity, they said,
"Why would you call your fraternity a frat? Would you call your country a cvnt?"
No doubt Spliff would be an ideal mate in battle. |
