"If it wasn't for the drink the Irish would rule the world!".

The Simpsons did something the same. St. Patricks Day. An orgy of drink and violence.

Actually, the reputation comes from the Irish habit of binge drinking. When we drink we don't stop until we're hammered. To do anything less would seem a waste of all that booze. But that might be only once or twice per week. Somebody who gets hammered most nights would either be a student or a loser.

I've noticed that other nationalities, like Canadians and Australians, crack open tins of beer in the afternoon and get a buzz going. Or start on the beers when they come home from work anyday of the week. The English tend to be lunchtime drinkers too. Drinking at lunch then going back to work!! Most Irish would rarely do that. We save it up for one big blast at the weekend.

So, I wouldn't say the Irish drink more than others. It's just we get totally mangled when we do go for it.
