This part amused me:

Quote:
The errors have angered domestic civic groups and citizens.

"The miscue is very grave. It's an insult to Korea. What if we call U.S. President George W. Bush, George W. Bushman? Then, how would the U.S. government respond?'' a Seoul resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.

Well, ignore for a moment that Korean news casters universally call him "Bushy", if a Korean government site mistakenly called him Bushman, I suspect .01% of the American population would feel anger. I think most Americans would have a brief chuckle and move on.

Can these people be less thin skinned? I remember the front page of the Korea Herald had a photo of various world leaders. They listed all their names save for Jean Chrtien. He was labeled as "the man on the right is unidentified".

The crux of their actual complaint:

Quote:
"In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il,'' it said.

So Tae-chung and not Dae Jung. In other words, they're still using the non-Korean hangul-to-romanization system?

Consistency: if using the same romanization system, should have been either Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il, or Kim tae-chung and Kim Cheong-il.

That said, bravo CIA for managing to piss off the bloody VANKers again.

I sure have noticed that alot said about Korea from many sources is a mistake. Lots of errors abound. Lots is not document neither or it's incomplete. This is a great big grey area still yet, unless we are talking about Seoul since documentation and all info is Seoul centric in nature.

Indeed it's a perceived consistency problem. I'm sure the CIA isn't 100% aware the South Koreans imposed a new system. It's like the first president of Korea is still mostly known by history as Syngman Rhee although his Korean name is "이승만" and the current system would have him as "Ri Seungman". To history Kim Dae Jung is still Tae-Chung.

Less? Confused Certainly. But it's hard to imagine them being more thin-skinned.

Anyway,

Some times it's beyond thin skinned... they can be so sensitive you'd think they'd been flayed and then rolled in salt and lemon juice.

Then again try saying anything about my home country...

Probably not. Check out their map.

Taegu, Pusan, Inch'on, Cheju-do, etc. Rolling Eyes I hope someone's paying a little closer attention to North Korea.

Notice Liancourt Rocks - that's Dokdo. Labelled in black, as if to indicate part of Korea. Now check the map of Japan.

In addition, the CIA Factbook continues to use Japanese names for ``Sea of Japan'' on a map of South Korea instead of ``East Sea'' despite the country's request for it to be changed.

My kids are always talking about this. I referred to it as the Sea of Japan and they freaked out. Come on, kids. No one is going to know what the East Sea is when you talk to someone outside your own culture. Get used to it. EVERYONE BUT YOU calls it the Sea of Japan. Unless you WANNA look like an idiot or be misunderstood, sometime in the future... Go ahead, call it the Donghae in Korean but learn and accept that other people call it something else.

Well at least the CIA has their facts straighter than the USFK. Either that or the yankee strike forces are always on vacation whenever I'm in Hongdae.

Well, if you dig deep enough, you will find errors on the internet about every topic in every possible language. VANK is a propaganda machine, pure and simple. Case in point: I have yet to see a story about VANK complaining about websites that are not American, Japanese, or Chinese.

I'm proposing setting up a group called Voluntary Agency for the Prevention Of the Misuse of the English Language, or VAPOMEL, which will work with VANK on a tit for tat basis
