hey,
I've got a shitload of viruses and other issues so I'm re-installing XP, but it's a really old version of XP. I've also got to departition the HD, and I'm just wondering what people think the best way to proceed is.
I know what I'm doing, but just looking for some departition advice, because I've never done it before and the computer is already screwed and I don't want to make things worse. |

Two ways...(there are more)
From the recovery console, delete all partitions then format the entire drive as one.
Recovery console command:
Diskpart manages partitions on hard disk volumes. The /add option creates a new partition. The /delete option deletes an existing partition. The variable device is the device name for a new partition (such as \device\harddisk0). The variable drive is the drive letter for a partition that you are deleting (for example, D). Partition is the partition-based name for a partition that you are deleting, (for example: \device\harddisk0\partition1) and can be used instead of the drive variable. The variable size is the size, in megabytes, of a new partition.
Or use the Windows Disk Management, found in Administrative tools. |

Yeah! Windows 95!
Edit: I case I was unclear in my sarcasm, don't use FDISK.

| A virus can damage a partition table structure. |

Yes and thus the
Never use FDISK to sort a virus problem or a possibly damaged partition table.
The big question is why one would want to use FDISK in the first place. There are so many better ways to work with partitions.
To be clear; the floppy drive is dead, as is anything related to it. |

There hasn't been a virus that does that for a long time.. Please name me a single recent virus that damages the partition table. Unless you got Monkey B type virus. Which wouldn't work any way cause you need Fat file system.
If you have a damaged partition table then your entire disk is screwed. Your MFT might get screwed up but its nothing chckdsk can't fix. |

Right then. Now, first, tell me it isn't possible, and second, thanks for strengthening my argument against FDISK.
One more time...
Yay! Windows 95! Well ok....Win98! FAT32!
Using FDISK to deal with ANY virus problems is just bad math.
And just for the record, the floppy drive is dead, as is anything related to it. |
