I am trying to avoid searching through many threads, so can anyone be clear with regard to exactly what will suffice as a "proof of residence" to meet tax exemption qualification?
Thank you....

There are various ways to prove this.
The ultimate proof is to go to immigration and get a "Certificate of the facts of Alien Registration" document. It will show your address. Maybe after that you need it translated.
Another way is for your employer to help by issuing you a "Certificate of Employment"
I hope that's enough for you. |

Proof of Korean residence? Or proof of your residence in your home country (USA, Canada, etc.) prior to starting at your new position in Korea? |

UT videam...yes, thanks for the differentiation...
I should have written that the school wants me to provide proof of residence in the U.S. in order to show eligibility for tax exemption in Korea.
I have done what is possible according to the city hall where I live...they gave me a notarized wallet-sized card stating that I live at such and such a place.....I am just wondering whether this will suffice as the document which is required in Korea or is there something more specific?
Thanks. |

What you need is a certification from the IRS that you are a U.S. resident for tax purposes. The IRS calls this certification Form 6166. In order to obtain this certificate, you need to file Form 8802 with the IRS. You can obtain this form and its instructions from the IRS web site. |
