Since I have heard Korea being compared to all of these countries, what do you think?

I've also heard it compared to Ireland, Spain, and Poland.

It really does matter in which respects you judge it as being simmilar to other countries.

I mean being North East Asian and being highly Confucianised it could be compared to China.

Being a country of very folksy, somewhat rustic people having been colonised by stronger and more millitaristic niegbours, you could compare it to Ireland.

Being a country of very loud, hot-blooded and rather poorly organised people who are obsessed about their food being the best in the world and trying to suffocate others with their culture, you could compare it to Italy.

If you looked at it as a country that has been highly Westernised and effectively having been re-built post ww2 with US forces occupying it (don't care how you wan to spin it, that's what it was) on the outside yet has changed very little behind closed doors, you could compare it to Japan.

As a country having been divided into two - one half capitalist and one half communist - we could compare it to Germany...

If we were to keep it general, the list would be endless.

you could compare it to canada, as they have a lot of similarities. both countries are painfully irrelevant on the global stage (and always will be), bordering sister nations that are superior to them in every measure. the only significant difference b/w korea and canada is that not everyone's ugly in korea.

In my first months here I thought Seoul specifically resembled Istanbul.

Korea can be considered the France of Asia........without the good food, coffee, women and interesting places.

Actually, I would consider Korea to be comparable to the most redneck, hick backwards state in the U.S...........(that is up to you to decide).

yeah korea is really like poland, it has the same concrete jungle feel due to a similarly traumatic history is and currently enjoying a similar resurgence. Theyve both also got the same sort of nouveau riche peasant thing going down.

If it wasn't for the work ethic they would be a near-perfect mix of Ireland and Italy. Irish and, I suspect, Italians, don't believe in hard work. I know. I'm Irish.

Irish characteristics..............Drink to get drunk. Family orientated. Have had their country partitioned. Always in the shadow of a bigger neighbor. Quick to extreme emotions of love or hate.

Italian characteristics.............Drive like drunken monkeys and obsessed with food. Vain about appearance.

The only spanner in the works which prevent Koreans being Irish-Italian is that they value hard work and place too high a value on monetary wealth.

And, no. This is not scientific.

I voted "other." It's funny this poll came up; I was just talking with a friend about many cultural similarities that Korea has with Ireland.

Ah, but.........

Ireland has good beer.
Great native music.
A holiday that is celebrated in much of the world.
People generally like the Irish.
Ireland has some of the nicest people (at least in my opinion).
The Irish know how to party.
The Irish have writers and poets that are known around the world.
Ireland has a very interesting culture and cultural relics.
Irish women have a sense of humor.
Ireland has a few bands that are known world wide.
Ireland is in touch with what is going on with the world.

Anything else to add to the list?
