More than 5 years in Korea and here's a new first. Sure it is nothing new to see Korean men spitting on the street, or on the sidewalk, or even spitting in my direction as I walk by, but this was a first last night in a sam gyup sal restaurant. We were sitting in the table and chairs section of the restaurant, as opposed to the sitting on the floor section. Two younger Korean guys were sitting in the same area. Throughout the entire time the guy was eating, he would continually spit on the floor of the restaurant, so much so that he had made a puddle of spit and gobbers all over the floor. It was disgusting, not just to do that any place, but to do it in a restaurant on their floor. I've never seen anything like it. Must have picked that habit up from his father.

I had one of 'my friends' (English guy) start doing that at my bar one night. He speaks Korean really well, but that was going WAY too native for me. In my bar.

I let it go (with a comment to cut that crap out).

I would have slapped him in Boston. When in Rome, right?

Koreans spit a lot more that foreigners do. Hands down. No contest.

Beautiful Korean women will up and spit on the street, and it's sort of freaky.

Spitting was invented by King Sejong the Great, and is one of the finest achievement of korean culture.

.. or don't you know what they used to do to mark their territory before spitting came into fashion?

I don't understand how spitting is completely acceptable, but blowing one's nose into a tissue is a huge no-no.

I think they are both disgusting and would only do it in the bathroom with the door closed, but I'm in the minority in both the US and Korea.

I only saw it one time and it was amazing. First the right nostril, then tilt the head the other way and clear out the left one. I felt like it was my own little "welcome to seoul" performance.

Its incredible, but I won't say I haven't seen it before. Being from Tennessee, there is plenty of spitting, snotting, and generally low manners all around. Ah, the days of sitting in HS class next to the boy with the Mountain Dew bottle full of tobacco spit.

Which is worse:

A female middle-school student hocking a loogie onto the floor of KFC, right next to your foot as you eat

A mother too lazy to take her 3-year old to the bathroom in same said KFC, instead opting to have the little tyke pee in a cola cup right there at the table.

Ah,yes. The peeing in restaurants.Even though the toilet sign is within plain view.

You're not the only one to have come across this.

I had my shoe peed on on the subway once. The grandma has enough time to get the kids pants down but nothing for him to pee in,then she whisks him off the train as the doors open spraying pee everywhere.Crowded train too.

I could see that as an emergency, but the ajumma cows in restaurants? Evil or Very Mad

It's been a headlong rush from the rice paddies to the wonders of Third-World New Tech in just a generation or so.

What really chaps my arse is when they're standing in the bathroom stall and they can't even manage to hock into the bowl... IT'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU FER CHRISSAKES! Sheesh.

OK, I feel better now.
