If any third world performer has a real shot at the sort of universal popularity last enjoyed by Bob Marley, its Youssou, a singer with a voice so extraordinary that the history of Africa seems locked inside it - Rolling Stone / Brian Cullman
African World Music Star, Youssou NDour is coming to Korea with his band, 'The Super Etoile De Dakar'.
Youssou N'Dour is one of the most celebrated African world-music stars in history. He has invented a thoroughly modern African pop style. He is always experimenting with new sounds based on traditional Senegalese musical styles. With his complex rhythms and soaring vocals, Youssou's music breaks down all language and cultural barriers.
Peter Gabriel introduced N'Dour to American and British artists via his So album (in 1986) and took N'Dour and The Super Etoile on the road with him in a subsequent world tour. His modern African pop style has influenced on and collaborated with artists as diverse as Paul Simon, Sting and Brandford Marsalis.
In 1994, N'Dour's collaboration with American/British hip-hop singer Neneh Cherry on the single 7 Seconds sold over 1.5 million copies and won MTV Europe's Best Song award. He also won American Grammy Award (best contemporary world music album) for the CD Egypt in 2005.
He has an amazing 4-5 octave range and sings in English, French, Fulani, and Serer as well as his native Wolof. The Village Voice has boldly called N'Dour the world's greatest pop vocalist and finds him the one African moving inexorably toward the world-pop fusion everyone else theorizes about".
Born in Dakar in 1959, N'Dour is a singer endowed with remarkable range and poise, and, as a composer, bandleader and producer, with a prodigious musical intelligence. N'Dour absorbs the entire Senegalese musical spectrum in his work, often filtering this through the lens of genre-defying rock or pop music from outside Senegalese culture. |
