Hello,
I am teaching somebody ESL and would like some advice. Does anybody know of any short story writers that have good material for this?
It can not be in old English (eg: Charles Dckens) or too profane or violent(Bukowski) for professional tutoring.
My first thoughts are Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Alice Munro...
Also, since I am a cheapskate, I want to find and print something that is available online. Thanks in advance,

Those are good thoughts. But I will have to add, probably much, much too difficult for an EFL learner. Most students are very ambitious and would love to read these authors -- that said, most fail and then become miserable and turned off from reading challenging things.
As a teacher, you should try to really get appropriate leveled reading material for your students, especially when it comes to literature. Challenging stuff, to be examined in detail can be short articles, essays, excerpts. But not full length short stories.
Not many authors work in the EFL classroom. Hemmingway is one that is possible. O'Henry at times another. I've used Elie Wiesel's Night but the topic is too depressing and deep.
There are a lot of short stories, abridged for ESL learners. I would go with these. How to find online? Well I would look through a bittorent maybe, but I'm not sure if you'll find any.
Sorry if I am more hurt than help. But that is my two cents worth this morning.

| A good story I have settled on is Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." I think this story solves my problem. Thanks! |

You can try the 'R' for reading links on the url below.
If it's short stories you're after, and the students level is not so high, you can try the abridged Penguin readers, for example - at only W5000 per text, I don't think it'll break your bank account... |
