This sounds like a stupid question, but will I have any trouble at the airport if I don't have my ARC card? I'm returning to Canada after being released from my contract.

No, since you're actually leaving.

I'd say probably not.

The first time I was here 10 years ago on a one year contract, and I flew out of the country after 6 months (this was at the time of the Asian crisis). The agent didn't ask to see my ARC.

However, nowadays, my ARC pretty much is my visa. I have a visa stamped in my passport, but whenever the Immigration officials review my documents, they need to see my ARC to see the notations that indicate my visa status.

You will be fined 100,000 won if they ask you for it and you don't have it, as you are expected to turn it in to immigration at the airport when you leave. You may hear some stories about some teachers who didn't get asked for their ARC when they left, but that is not the standard practice. the best thing to do is go to immigration and get a replacement card. I assume the replacement fee is less than the fine.

Correct. If your contract is finished, you will most likely be asked for the card.

The replacement fee was 20,000 about 6 months ago. Take 2 photos, if I remember correctly.

That doesn't solve anything. They are used within the time frame of your VISA, not after it has ended.
A re-entry 'PERMIT' is more expensive anyway.

Get a replacement card. I actually think the airport fee, which you must pay to fly, is higher than 100,000.
