I don't know if these pics have been posted before, but this blog has a large number of colour photos from Daegu in 1954. |

Wow, some of those photos look like some areas of Cholla Province outside of Cheongeup these days..... |

Incredible pics. My Korean's not that good enough to know if that guy was a US soldier or not.
Think of all the malaria, cholera, malnutrition going on after the war. Terrible. |

Despite the poverty, Korea looked like a better place back then, or rather, a place I'd rather visit than today's Daegu. So many people had smiles on their faces. Very interesting to see these pics, thanks for posting them! I'd like to know from the soldiers who were here back then what the culture was like; What it was like here before the bad drivers, the dirty air, the ugly buildings, the hacking/smoking/drunk ajoshi's/ajummas, the 24-hour-a-day school cycle, etc. What were the people really like? Of course, I wish I could ask my grandparents the same question about Canada, but they've all died, so won't get that chance.
What did they put in those long pipes they used to smoke? Great to see the old-style hats and the white hanboks or whatever they are. |

That kind of what I felt when I saw them. But also a bit of shock at how vastly different a place it was only 50 years ago. Seeing things like this really lets you see the changes that Korea has gone through. |

Oh please, its alright to be a bit touched but with all the stuff wrong with today's Korea its still a better place. Lets not forget that Korea then was one of the poorest places in the world. Want to see that? Go to Bangladesh..Im sure the people in that country would gladly take the problems associated with development.
And comparing 1950s Canada to 1950s Korea has to be a joke, right? |

Very interesting pics indeed. I recognise the landscape in the background, but nothing else. It's amazing to think that those little kids walking around in rags are now the 60-somethings I see walking around in suits barking into handphones. |

Very interesting. It doesn't look quite as hellish as the pictures of 1950's or 60's Seoul. There are some very interesting photos along the Cheonggye stream of how the area used to look. Take a stroll some day and check them out. Here are couple of shots of the banks of Cheonggye from 1956 and 1965.

For me the most telling thing I see indicating the change is the height difference between the youth and the elderly indicating a large change in the levels of protein in the diet.

So, sorry if this sounds stupid, but the old guy in these photos was a soldier or aid worker and now he is hosting a Korean student or family, who has posted the photos he took in 1954?
Incredible...almost as crazy as the changes in my hometown in Canada. |
