I'm at the point where I have to send a long list of various documents to my recruiter. One that is required is "two letters of reference". How important are these exactly? Do they have to be Professional references (such as from college professors), or will references from neighbors, friends, or family members suffice? Does immigration really check these out?

They should be professional letters of reference. If you have any type of teaching experience, a letter regarding that will also help.

"should be" is relative. I know public schools teachers who had their friends write their letters or wrote them themselves. It's just a tick on the checklist. Nobody is actually going to read them.

Get 2 any old references on paper and your all set....don't worry about them being professional....if it is too professional it might confuse them....
