I just began using Windows Movie Maker as I decided to make short movie files I could sent relatives. So far, Windows Movie Maker seems fine for my needs. Well, I can't really be sure of that, since I've used it only for about an hour, but so far so good.
What I'd like to know is how I could save my videos into .avi or .mpg files. Windows Movie Maker seems to be able to capture a lot of different format files without any problem but only saves in his own format, .wmv.
I need to save in either .avi or .mpg so I can send files that can be played in a digital photo frame I bought my grandmother. She's over 90, so you can guess I won't ask her to find out herself!  |

export your movie to dv-avi and then visit video help forums and find a conversion program and tutorial. THere are a number of legitimate free ones available. I haven't used them so cannot make a specific recommendation. |

Just save the file as something else.
Drag the imported or captured clip to the bottom panels (if you made clips), select "save to my computer", choose where and the name, then choose "other settings" from the choices listed. There is a drop-down menu with as many choices as the codecs on your machine allow.
No need for any third-party software. WMM is pretty basic, but does a reasonable job and has a load of options to save a file as, in regards to compression. |

wrong.
There is a choice for quality settings but you are still limited to wmv or avi. |

I wasn't clear enough...I was talking about compression, not file types...sorry. |

www.videohelp.com is a great site for all things video including converters
one of the main reasons I abandoned WMM was the limited file types you could export as. Another was the fact that you can't fade the audio track only in or out and the final nail in the coffin was audio clicks which the software randomly inserted when you cut a clip. |
