Earlier Thursday in Seoul, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun urged Japan to be more sincere in addressing its colonial past as dozens of people rallied outside the Japanese Embassy, lining up dead dogs heads on the ground. |
Apparently, they already are. |

You can blame the US for that, really. Sure, the moral thing would have been for Japan to pay up, but the US congress is passing/has passed a law that aims at forcing the Japanese to do so. The law is basically an attack on Japanese sovereignty, which is why it isn't in Japan's best interests to do so. He could have pulled the Japanese embassador from Washington in protest, but that would not have good for the Japanese economy. |

Where to begin? This post is riddled with dis-jointed historical misunderstandings. I can't be bothered to address them all.
A 'Keyboard License' system should be implemented. |

How about: blaming America for this fails to account for America's decisive role in liberating said comfort women in the first place?
Or how about: Tokyo is its own man, so to speak, and should be praised or blamed (if that is how the discourse must be constructed) accordingly? |

I don't think the U.S. government should get involved with this. It is not like it is getting involved in regards to Turkey and the massacre of Armenian during World War I. The Japanese should address it rather than putting them in a corner like that. |

Its not much different. Both were terrible crimes and the US is right to push this. |

Roh Moo Hyun lecturing others on "respecting historical truth" is like a hagwon director lecturing a nun on business ethics. |

Glad you're on top of this story. Even though I know the Japanese government habitually resorts to chicanery when it comes to concealing its wartime atrocities, I have to admit that this gaffe really surprises me. And PM Abe said he wanted to shore up relations with China and Korea. Yeah, this will certainly help heal the wounds. And some Japanese apologists (including a few on this forum) can't understand why the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Malays, and Thais among others still harbor deep-seated resentment toward the Japanese government. B-astards.
Gopher:
Well said and I don't mind it a bit that some of the paranoid types on this forum assume we're socks for one another.
Hollywoodaction:
Do you work for the Japanese Diet? Talk about being an apologist!

I'd stay away from Japanese restaurants, consulates, etc in Korea for the next few days. The last time this happened, there were riots, attacks on Japanese nationals & firebombings. China also took exception, with a string of incidents there. |

Shinzo Abe became PM very recently. It was a previous government that made the acknowledgement in '93, not him. |

That's correct. I watched for the story on Arirang TV last night. Nothing. But a Korean language channel devoted nearly 10 minutes to this story. Odd.
CCTV-9 in Beijing talked about it but is so much better at covering and reporting the news even though it is still at times state-censored. |

Abe should resign. The Japanese government is scum. Pandering to rightwing nationalists is sickening and the ASEAN nations should threaten economic boycott of a sort that will provoke an official response.
The Japanese government has long tolerated and sometimes courted these fascist forces in their midst. It's time it stopped.
And the further tragedy is that it hardens the hearts of Chinese, Korean, and Filipino youth to the Japanese who might otherwise think more generously than their elders.
The arrogance of the Japanese is seeping through. Where is the outcry from on the homefront, save from the far Left, which needs no nudging to criticize the current government? |
