This one is rich...

Classes started today (Friday). I specifically asked my boss if we had Freshmen classes today (she had said no previously, because there is an orientation for Freshmen).

So I double-checked on Wednesday.

"No, there are no Friday Freshmen classes."

Ok, no problem! I'll see you on Monday.

Then today at 11am, I get a frantic call from an administration assistant, "Dr. Park Blah Blah from the dean's office said you skipped your first class! Students waiting... where are you..? etc."

Wonderful way to start the new school year! Our recent hire doesn't even have her schedule yet, or her ID number to get that schedule. Obviously, she missed class as well (but she had also been told "no class").

Hope you stayed at home.

"That's too bad. See you Monday!"

Nope... came in to tell the students to come next week. I've had a few trickle in. They didn't get the message, either.

the exact same thing happened to me at my first uni job in china. i was pissed off at the director of English, but wound up saying "oh, yes, i must have mis-heard" because arguing wasn't worth it.

I work for a uni that started today also. I found myself asking as I walked in the cold rain, "Why the f%ck would they start classes on a Friday, the day after a national holiday??"

Isn't it obvious that many students won't attend class on the first day??
Why not just start on Monday??

Ah!! Because if we start on Friday, it counts as 1 week of the semester...so only 15 weeks until vacation!! Cool
