I am in country. I was working at another hagwon which went bankrupt. After negotiation, my hagwon said they would pay for my airfare to go back home after a year. I wouldn't have taken the job otherwise, because I must go home in January. I have to make a visa run in April. Should I expect them to pay that. It isn't the contract, but I am asking for that. I mean I can't legally work after April if it is not paid for. What is the usual in this situation? I want them to at least pay half of the cost. What is the usual cost to go to Japan and stay there for one day and get your visa? Does it cost about 500 all together? |

If you're starting at a new job, you have to get a new VISA now! UNLESS...immy is letting you transfer your VISA, if that is the case, you can probably just get it extended in April, ie. no VISA run required.
If you do have to go on a VISA run, the school should pay for everything, it's still cheaper than getting a newbie over from the States or Canada.

It won't cost 500,000 assuming you pick a reasonably cheap hotel and eat sensibly. 300-350,000 should do it. |

You can do it for 250k + airfare and that includes the hotel across the street from the embassy at Y10,000 for the night.
You can cheap out, spend the night in a tube, eat fast food and get by on about 130k + airfare.
There is lots of good info in the visa run sticky in the travel forum as well.
