|
|
Last night I went out drinking with my co-worker and his friend, another teacher, who have recently returned from a month in the US. They were finishing an intensive language / teaching course. A month is too much time to go without doing laundry, so after a while they were off to the launderette across from the hotel. One of them said he put his dirty clothes in the dryer, returning an hour later to wonder why they were warm but still dirty. The other one put the coins in the front-load washer, started the thing, and waited a few minutes as the machine started before he realised he had to put his clothes in first; then he couldn't get the door open as it had locked for the duration.
Eventually an ajumma on the same course showed up to help them get sorted out. |

| I would be very embarrassed if I couldn't do the basic things to take care of myself alone. My Mom taught me how to use the washing machine when I was 12. She had no intention of doing it for me forever. |

| Oh gosh, I hope they were kidding and just trying to make light of a situation... that's scary. |

When me and my siblings were all teens, my mother dropped the bomb on us and our father by deciding that
1) she was going back to school
2) we were taking up the slack in regards to cooking and cleaning.
To this day, I can slap together a mean PB&J. |

No, they weren't kidding at all. The (new 'Blue') soju was bringing about complete candour and I was almost falling off my stool laughing. |

What's this "Blue" soju?
One travel tip I heard was to use all your threadbare undergarments and simply throw them away as you go.No need for laundry. |

Ah, yes, Koreans putting one foot in the grave without ever taking the other one out of the cradle, that's to be expected. Now if you'll exuse me, I need to call my girlfriend so she can order a pizza for me.
And, yeah, what is this blue soju? |

| No one ever taught me how to do laundry. I think it's pretty godamn self-explanatory. Hmm.. okay the button says "cycle".. I'm washing my silk panties, so I should put it on.. delicate? Whew, close one. Had to think about it. |

I had a friend in the US who dated a man who lived in a residential hotel and did not do laundry. He had his shirts laundered, his suits dry-cleaned, and considered socks and undies to be disposable. |

I once had an adult student who was notably uncomfortable (physically) during a morning class, so much so that I had to ask him if he was ok. He told me that his wife was out of town so when he got up that morning, he wasn't sure where to find his clothes and it was dark, so he ended up putting on his wife's underpants. Didn't realize it until he went the bathroom when he got to work.
(I might have posted this story before but its worth telling again.) |

| My college had a lot of upper class WASPs at it. I'll never forget going down to the laundry in the first few weeks and teaching some of the girls how to do laundry for the first time (something I started doing when I was 10). I gues without the maid they are just as incapable at fuctioning as adjossis. |
