I am not teaching kindy age kids now, but I really enjoy times I've had little Korean kids around me, ages 2-6 or so. When I'm out at the park, on a plane, or in the market or restaurant, if I see a child this age, I'll often just go right up and try making it laugh and almost always the mother seems to enjoy that a foreigner is paying attention to their child. I'll make faces, anything to get them laughing or giggling. Sometimes I'll say "silly girl" or "silly boy" in a tone that gets them laughing even more. Once, however, a mother got mad, thinking silly meant the same as stupid. The mother could speak enough English to get her point across, but couldn't understand enough to get what I said when I tried to tell her they did not mean the same thing.

Has anyone else experienced this? The kids are simply cute and innocent and a few years later they tend to get very quiet and shy, but at this stage they are kind of, well, silly!

Who says silly? Conjures up images of some english fop saying"oh you are a silly boy, Harold".

I agree with the mother.

edit: Harold is the english fop's friend.

Wait, you used the word "fop" twice now, haven't you, without anyone previously referring to one...hmmm...

stupid is as stupid does

This is may be a trans atlantic thing..I know for a fact if any of my peer group at home used the word, eyebrows would be raised. Its a word for older women and unusually camp gay men. Basically the type of people who watch the eurovision song contest.

I think silly might be understood as 'babo', which isn't a nice thing to just walk up to some child and say.

The really boggling aspect of the scenario, in my eyes, is how you reported a solitary incident of a mother (possibly) misunderstanding your language and decided to call this 'the Korean mindset'. What's that all about?
