U.S. draws negative ratings in poll
Associated Press
LONDON - Israel, Iran and the United States were the countries with the most negative image in a globe-spanning survey of attitudes toward 12 major nations. Canada and Japan came out best in the poll, released Tuesday.
The survey for the British Broadcasting Corp.'s World Service asked more than 28,000 people to rate 12 countries - Britain, Canada, China, France, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, North Korea, Russia, the United States and Venezuela - as having a positive or negative influence on the world.
Israel was viewed negatively by 56 percent of respondents and positively by 17 percent; for Iran, the figures were 54 percent and 18 percent. The United States had the third-highest negative ranking, with 51 percent citing it as a bad influence and 30 percent as a good one. Next was North Korea, which was viewed negatively by 48 percent and positively by 19 percent.
Canada had the most positive rating in the survey, with 54 percent viewing it positively and 14 percent negatively. It was followed by Japan and France.
Respondents were also asked their views of the 27-member European Union; 53 percent saw it as positive and 19 percent as negative.
Britain, China and India were viewed more positively than negatively, while Russia had more negative than positive responses. Opinion on Venezuela was evenly split.
"It appears that people around the world tend to look negatively on countries whose profile is marked by the pursuit of military power," said Steven Kull, director of the University of Maryland's Program on International Policy Attitudes, which conducted the research along with pollster GlobeScan.
"Countries that relate to the world primarily through soft power, like France and Japan and the EU in general, tend to be viewed positively," he added.
Pollsters questioned about 1,000 people in 27 different countries, including the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, India, Brazil, Mexico and Australia; as well as four predominantly Muslim countries: Egypt, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia; and two countries with large Muslim populations: Lebanon and Nigeria.
The respondents were interviewed in person and over the phone from November to mid-January. The margin of error ranges from 3.1 percent to 4.9 percent, depending on the country. |

Is that 1,000 people spanning over 27 different countries, or 1,000 people each within 27 different countries?
If countries that pursue military power are supposedly viewed negatively, why is China the exception?
That finding is going to be grist in the mill of the anti-anti-American crowd here.
Ah, there's my answer. Indonesia was the only other remotely East Asian country in the survey besides China.
Interesting that France the country comes out so well, but in European polls French as people poll as by far the worst. |

When I was in India I was chatting with one of the girls who walks along the beach trying to sell things to the tourists. She asked me where I was from and I told her, Canada. She said Canadians were nice. I asked her who the nicest and the worst people were that she met on the beach. Her answer was that Canadians and french and german people were nice. Americans were pretty good, so were english people. She didn't like the Irish and she said the worst people by far were the Israelis.
A few days later I got roughly the same response from a different girl. These girls were about 12 or 13 and 16 respectively. Of note was that neither girl said 'jews', but Israelis.
I think if Israel made it clear to their citizens while travelling, they might make more friends in the world and find a great deal more sympathy and support as a result. That said, one of the nicer people I met in india was an israeli. |

Israelis don't need to be nice. If we say anything bad about them, it's automatically anti-semitism.
They have the ultimate excuse. |

Israel is doing things in the region that may have many people have a certain negative view of its government including among world Jewry, but this survey is very bad. It is unfair to Israel.
Why do I say that? Four of the 27 countries are Muslim countries.
That is 14% of the countries roughly. Then two other countries have a large Muslim population. If you add them that is 6 out of 27 or 20% of the sample. Anyway, where is Sudan on the list?
The U.S. would be a lot higher on the list if George Bush and his administration didn't act so arrogant and ignorant. I think if the U.S. had a parliamentary system, there would have been more restraint on one party acting in a dumb fashion, because they are led by a leader who has tunnel vision and won't listen to other conservatives who disagree. |

I'm afraid your methodology or rationale is a bit off. Muslims comprise about 21% of the world's population. So the numbers used are about right. |

My guess is that a large chunk of that 14% are Americans who have worked with Canadians in Korea.
The other would be European hockey fans. |

You do have a point there. However, here is a problem you cannot deny. The list is short with only 12 countries to look at. The Sudan is not on the list as far as I can see, and it is worse than Israel. Zimbabwe was not on the list as well. |

Emperor Octavius:
A statistician, or any quantitative researcher, could make Swiss cheese of this survey. Nice try. I realize your purpose is to provoke your adversaries but you'll have to do better than this feeble attempt. |

By right-wing, you mean everyone except you, right? Or, do you mean people that don't despise the United States? According to your comments, anyone that doesn't hate the United States with every fiber of their being must be "right-wing," right? |

i constantly call for a higher level of discussion on this forum and get attacked for doing so, but it;s posts like this one that prove my point.
A member of this forum posted a survey by the BBC and essentially said, "let the discussion begin" and you attack the survey's methodology and make a personal attack on the poster.
Get a life and a clue.
I'm editing this post because another dimwit just made another stupid post and a personal attack.

What? Because you don't happen to see eye to eye with SM then it's his posts that sink to to a new low?
What about gems like...

Are you retarded? Probably, yes, however you didn't address my legitimate point at all: we should curb air pollution to save our lives and cities from choking pollution ala Beijing (most Chinese and INdian cities in fact).
You're a putz.
And yes the NP is a rag that only survived because rich conservatives (a criminal in one case) supported it.
And a Frenchman change his mind????? No say it isn't so. |

This is exactly how the American public got tricked/lied into war. Stop asking questions Huffdaddy, you are crazy/unpatriotic/islamofacist/etc when you ask questions. Just trust Cheney and company to figure it out for you! |

Huffdaddy, it doesn't matter what their "stated position" is, all that matters is what the right-wing nutters on this board (and in the White House) say their position is. Haven't you learned that? Only the things that US says are true. Everyone is just secretly hatching a plot to attack the Homeland. |
But, I guess if you agree with someone, they're allowed to make all the low-class comments that they want.
I also find it funny that you wrote an off-topic post, making a personal attack, while complaining about people making off-topic posts and personal attacks. |

Ahhhhhh Pligganease, when did your tenure expire at FOX News, because just like them and the Bush Crime Family you take things out of context or can't identify sarcasim and humour.
The first 2 quotes you attributed me were responses to someone making a personal attack on me and getting off topic, you should try reading the post(s) before mine before you misread and misrepresent what I say.
The last 2 quotes were me being sarcastic and defending huffdaddy after everyone came after him for having the audacity to ask a question. SO as usual you prove that conservatives can't take or get a joke, perhaps you're the one responsible for that craptastic Daily Show ripoff FOX News now runs to their big audiences in the retirement vilages of southern Florida and Arizona. |

What is wrong is that we are all dug solidly into our ideological trenches, and we know where everybody else is, and we are tired of eachother. Most of the CE posters have been around this forum a long time and generally dislike each other. I, for example, would celebrate if dd were hit by a bus. Facked up, but true.
Don't worry about changing it.. We are all on the dark side.
AND, OH is a leftist clown who posted this article to continue a long-running Canada VS USA theme on this site. |
