Yahoo says Frank Miller has made a movie of the Battle of Thermopylae and it's due out in March '07.

Wa-hoo!

For those of you who are historically challenged, that was the battle where 300 Spartans stood off the invading Persian Empire for 3 days, defending 'democracy' against the nefarious Persian (modern Iran) Shahenshah (King of Kings) Xerxes. (Democracy is in quotes since the Spartans had TWO kings, making defence of democracy rather ironic.)

Anyway, since you live in Korea and doubtless have a lot of free time, you should hustle down to Kyobo and buy Penguin's Herodotus' The Histories'--it's by far the best modern translation. And it's a hoot! Herodotus sets out to explain how the war came about and he takes hundreds of pages to make his point. Reading it is like sitting down in a bar on a rainy Saturday afternoon with a good friend who is a great story-teller. He starts out in the direction of making his point, but then gets distracted by great story after great story. Whether they are all 100% true or not is beside the point. A good story is a good story.

Hope the movie is good.

edited for an oops over the wrong Persian king. Darius, Xerxes...all those damn ancient Persians look alike to me.

Yes but do you know what "MOLON LABE" mo-lone lah-veh means? And who said it? Winner gets a cookie. I wonder if he'll say it in the movie.

Some nice special effects but is it all just macho warfare? Or is there any human element to the story?

And....The rhino being ridden into battle..is entirely fictional..of course. Why didn't they just put in a star trek ship as well if they were going to include that??

What with it being the Spartans and all it can't be overly macho.

Question for any ancient Greek speakers in the crowd:

How is Leonidas pronounced?

I've heard both Le-uh-NI-dus and Lee-ON-i-dus. Or something like that.

I've always wondered what Platonic love was called before Plato.

Please, let's not help give Miller a bigger ego than he already has; the film is directed by Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead remake, upcoming Watchmen adaptation).

Yahoo is my bible. I do not question it. You however, are free to favor this Z. Snyder person if you wish. If he was mentioned in the fine print, well, so be it. I stand by my original post until I get my new bifocal prescription filled.

Will the Spartans be perfoming naked calisthenics in the film? If so, I probably won't be seeing it.
