If you plan to be a missionary... maybe...
but I have something against a vow of poverty or performing unlimited free overtime. |

Thank you for your response. Have you worked for this school? We have found the salary to be higher than many other Christian schools we have researched. Would you by chance have any recommendations for Christian schools that would give a better offer? The additonal hours would not bother us if they were Church related, as we would not expect to be paid to teach Sunday school for example. If you do have additional information concerning this school or other Christian schools we would greatly appreciate more info.
Thanks,
Jessica |

I have no direct comment on this particular school other than the one I made above.
I would like to add however that in my personal experience Korean Christian schools tend to be more cultist than Christian and the treatment of staff reflects this attitude.
My recommendation, if you are a very strong Christian, is to find a good school then find a Church that you can be an active participant in.
There are lots of churches here and many of them have English services, Sunday schools, programs for English speaking expats, outreach programs for factory workers and their families.
Speaking from experience I can emphatically say that they would appreciate you and your commitment with open arms and hearts in the true spirit of Christian brotherhood. |

Simply because a school has Christian in the name, does not mean it is reputable. I gave the contract (in the link posted) a quick glance and there are some red flags.
--2 year contract. A E-2 visa is good for only one year. While this in itself is a minor quibble (since the visa can be extended) it sounds like they want you there for 2 years straight (no vacation in between)...since these private schools run year-around. Not only that but when they say occassional that means most of the time if not all the time. You will be likely working 7 days a week. Trust me that's a recipe for burn-out.
Even if by some chance you get most Saturdays off, there are other red flags.
--No mention of pension. This is required by law (although the director will try and tell you different). You are required to give 4.5% of your salary and the director is required to contribute a matching amount. And at the end of your contract (if you are North American) you get the entire lump sum. Many directors will tell you different or not tell you at all in order to save money.
--Taxes are too high. 5% is outrageous and 3.5% is still quite high. Check the links on this board for the website for the National Tax Service and see exactly what tax you should be paying.
--"sponsor" additional activities=lots of unpaid overtime and maybe a financial contribution on your part as well...I'd get an exact definition of what this "sponsor" issue entails.
Honestly I wouldn't work there. I'd work for a public school and do what another poster suggested you do on Sundays.
If you DO decide to work there at least get a copy of the contract and post it up here BEFORE signing, as there are numberous people on this board with extensive experience of what should be in a good contract and what to look out for. |
