I work at a public high school, and have been asked by my principal to teach an 'extra' class for advanced students who are interested. I have been given pretty much free reign to construct the curriculum for this class, and here's my idea:

I want to have the class read a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book, you know, the kind we (or maybe just I) used to read when I was maybe 10. I think that sort of book would be about the right reading level for advanced high school students, and would be more interesting than reading a regular book.

I would have the class read a chapter of the book before each class, and during that class we would discuss the chapter and make our decision collectively about what the character should do next, that way, everyone has a stake in what happens.

If the class makes a wrong decision and the book comes to an undesirable end, we could go back and change our previous decision.

Does this sound like a good idea? The students would have photocopies of the chapter assigned for that class, so they wouldn't be able to cheat and read ahead. My only worry is that we will never make it to the end of the book, and the class will become bogged down and bored.

Any suggestions?

I found about 30 of those old things at my mom's house a few months ago, and thought they would be great for teaching kids here. I dunno about the photo copying...sounds like a lot of cut, paste, and cut again...but it'd be worth it for sure. I'm getting my old stack sent out sometime soon.

Wow!! That sounds like a great idea!! You might want to look over the chapter that you've assigned for any vocab that they might not know. Maybe have them read the parts of the chapter that where the unknown vocab might occur and try to figure out what the word means BEFORE checking their dics?

The books are short enough and fun enough to appeal to them...go with it!!
