Hey everyone,
I just wanna make sure I'm not paranoid or anything so:
When you're with foreigners in public, do Koreans (mainly Korean young men) stare and start making jokes or laugh amongst themselves about you or your friends?
I was in Hongdae on sat. night with several foreigners and these two young Korean males kept staring and laughing to themselves at my korean American and white friends when we were sitting, talking and eating. I'm sure they were laughing at us cause they were directly staring and laughing to themselves.
I wanted to turn one of those korean dudes upside down and shake him violently.
I think it's a complete and utter double standard here in Korea. Hey, we wanna learn english so we can get a good job, but when we see you(english speaking foreigner), we wanna laugh and make jokes about you.
What are you thoughts everyone? ( in my opinion I think korean guys born and raised in korea are insensitive asses)

Try not to take it so personally.
I would imagine if you were back to wherever you come from, and a group of Koreans was sitting at a table, you would notice and talk about them...it's their country, they can laugh as much as they want to... |

Yes, those 5 guys represent all of them country wide. They are all pompous asses because there is no room for personal differences. |

Do you and your friends know any Korean?
How long have you been in Korea?
Why get angry when you really have no idea?
Why over-inflate your own ego and feeling of self-importance?
Young Korean #1: "Man, I wish I could speak English with those people" (Looks in the direction of whiteys)
Young Korean #2: "Haha you fucking suck at English you crazy cow!" (Looks in direction of whiteys) |

It happens. Though I wouldn't get too worked up about it. They're just trying to conceal their own inadequacies and insecurities most of the time.
It's just like back home, those who can, do and just get on with their lives not worrying about what strangers say they about them. Those who can't, try to deflect from their own inadequacies by judging or making comments about others to try to inflate themselves.
Just like back home, the only thought you should think about when encountering these people is pity cos they're losers and both you and they know it. |

I think my Korean gyopo friends might have induced the laughing from Native Koreans.
Whatever the reason, I definitely feel a double standard here in Korea. |

Koreans generally don't laugh at me, and I have some pretty funny looking friends. |

Or maybe you feel inadequate and you're trying to project that on some random strangers just because they looked at you by saying that they are deflecting their inadequacies by judging you when it's really you who feel inadequate for judging other people by saying the are judging you for inadequate judging and-- oh, now my eyes have gone all crossed. |

I tried to write a funny limerick about this situation and failed.
Therefore this thread is beyond humor and will inevitably tumble into a tit for tat argument about whether the korean guys meant any harm, was the Op misjudging them, how he hasn't been in korea long enough to understand, or so long he's jaded, He will be accused of hating /not understanding Korean culture or being a *beep* for not laying the smackdown right then and there.
Some pertinent questions will be asked in the course of the thread such as, were they wearing pink shirts? were they holding hands? any mullets?
I think that about covers it.

Straighten those panties out, son. Is you gyopo friend a guy that dresses like a girl? Seems like he should be the one to be upset if they were laughing at him. If someone laughs at you in public and you don't like it, you need to feed them a bowl of shut the **** up |

Perhaps, so.
Thank you, you've just given me another complex. |

Well it works both ways doesn't it, i spent a fair potion of friday night laughing to myself about the state my coworkers got in during dinner and drinks and the subsequent homosexual behaviour exhibited. They laugh at us about things, we laugh at them about things, it's all even at the end of the day. |

I seriously doubt this to be the case. Most of these guys can read & understand university level textbooks in English and complicated technical manuals. Please don't tell me they're so poor at English that they can't hold their own in a 5 minute general conversation. |

it's because korea isn't a multi-cultural country like america, canada, australia, nz, etc.
koreans born and living in korea don't get to see people of other races in person too often, if ever, depending on what part of korea they live.
so for them it would be like when the african slaves were first brought to america or maybe an american kid who's old enough to distinguish the differences in races seeing and realizing that people are different.
i think the reactions of the beholders can vary from person to person depending on their personality, attitude, age and experience. hence some koreans just stare at u but quickly look away when u look back while some dickheads just blatantly laugh at u.
i dont know exactly what they would be laughing about, maybe laughing is just a natural reaction to a new situation for some ppl.
in any case, laughing at strangers is extremely rude so u should just pass them off as dickheads. |
