Did you come to Korea with a visa in your passport, or did you do a visa run after you got here?
I'm voting twice, cause the first was within a week, the second I had it before I came. |

Originally...when I started my first contract here I had my E-2 before I arrived.
Pre-paid ticket as well. |

I am the foreign manager at my school, and while it was practised before to bring people in, and get them to do a visa run, I will no longer allow it at my school. There are times when I see a possible need for it to happen, but the consequences are too extreme.
I had 2 teachers, 1 month before they were going to leave, go on a vacation to China, and they didn't get a re-entry visa. So their working visas were cancelled. There was no point in sending them to Japan to get a new visa, and now I am short staffed. I would rather sub 20 classes per week then bring someone in illegally.
But, to answer you question, yes, I had my E2 visa in my passport before I landed. |

| First 2 times I had it before I came. I had some problems with the second school though and was put on a G-1 visa which I am on now. I've been working illegally the past 2 months and found out a few hours ago that I am going to Japan a few hours from now. A long story. |

Had mine when I got here. Bought the ticket myself, so I could get the points, and was refunded part of the money when I first got here in cash. I was offered the lot but didnt want that much cash on me.
The rest of the cash was there the day after I asked for it.

I had my visa before my first trip here.
I did a visa run for each subsequent new employer as I completed each contract and moved on.
I have had 2 extensions that did not require a visa run. |

| I came here and spent a month finding the right job. It paid off: I stayed at that job for 4 1/2 years. |

It wouldn't let me vote
I tried to get my visa while at "home" (was living in another foreign country) but it was a pain. I came here without one but had the visa number so took off to Japan 2 days after I got here. I thought this was normal considering a number of the people I flew over with were doing the same thing. But working for a pubic school made me pretty secure that I wasn't/won't get screwed. |

| Not sure what happened to the poll. I tried to place a second vote as promised, and it wouldn't let me. |

| What's the point of coming over just to do a visa run a day or two later? All it means is the school wants you to risk teaching illegally. |

That's ONE way to get your working visa cancelled! All you have to do is take a vacation mid-contract without a "RE-ENTRY PERMIT, Good for MULTIPLE re-entry." Immigration will confiscate your ARC card at the airport before you jet set off to your destination.
Word to the wise: You have to PAY about 60,000 won for a MULTIPLE re-entry permit. Do this at the immigration office when you get your ARC card if you think you will be taking a vacation anytime during your work visa. |

It could, but it could also mean that the school wants to get you here before you change your mind. The school never asked me to teach. I had to do a week of "training" and went during that. |
