Anyone able to help me out on this? I have a little half-size, turtle shell helmet right now, which is not only embarrassing, but leaves my face freezing and chapped in this weather. What I'm looking for is a good selection of full-sized helmets. I checked the shop near my apartment, but none of them will fit my massive, watermelon head.

So, fellow rough riders.. any advice?

Q.

Umm did you try any other motorcycle stores? Try a bigger one.

I live in a smaller city, but all the bike shops here carry a range of helmets.

Full face ones are great in this weather eh... To go along with my helmet I also bought a terrorist/bank-robber style balaclave(skimask) yesterday. It cost W3,000, it looks like this:

Another good place to find a helmet might be to ask foreigners who have had their bike stolen =)

If you haven't found a helmet from a (local) bike shop that fits you, try heading up to Seoul and visit one of the big bike shops. These shops cater to high-end bikes, and thus high-end helmets. These helmets are much more pricey than their Korean knock-offs, but PLEASE note that the quality is VASTLY superior.

Any big-bike dealer will have helmets that suit you...albeit puh-ricey.

Try Honda for example:
http://www.hondakorea.co.kr/html/motorcycle/dealer/dealer.jsp

If you want you can get a "pseudo-ninja mask" to complement your top hat. I used them on long rides and was warm-ish. After 60+ minutes in sub freezing temps I needed to warm up, but if you are touring in such weather in Korea.....

Any help?

Exclamation shoosh,

Ryst

Qinella, you know where the motorcycle market is downtown in Twegyero (4 ~ 5 ga) surely? Not far from Chungmuro Stn, near the pet market and the Daehan Kukjang, not a million miles from Myeongdong? If you've never been there, you really do need to make the trip. Just get out at Chungmuro Stn and you're a minute or two away from Guruland.

Hyeon Een: Yeah, I said in the OP I checked the store near my place. They just had about 5 helmets and none fit.

Ryst: Thanks for the help. I dont' know where big bike dealers are, though. I wonder how much I can expect to spend. I was hoping no more than 80,000 won.

JongnoGuru: Indeed, I did not know about the motorcycle market. I see on the Naver map that 퇴계로 is just between 충무로 and 명동. Is the motorcycle market easy to locate? I have never been to that area, so I'm unfamiliar with the pet stores and theatres. Thanks for the help^^

There's a shop in Itaewon with good riding gear at decent prices. I bought my helmet and jacket there. If you're paying less than W100,000 for a helmet you're getting crap, btw.

Wow, definitely. Qin, sorry to say this but you're going to have to double that estimate of yours, and even then you'll still be in "budget" territory and short of what we'd consider standard back home. If I recall, you ride a scooter (?) so it may seem like overkill to spend so much on a helmet. But that's just looking at it the wrong way. You cannot skimp on whatever protection you can arm yourself with -- that's part of the bargain if your going to ride a motorcycle (or scooter) in Korea. Simple as that. Oh, and jettison your half-helmet. Chin replacements are a b1tch, dude.

The less money you spend on a helmet means that your brain is really not that valuable.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Wrench. Laughing

Well dudes, I did not read your posts about prices before leaving. I stopped by my local store again just to have a last look before heading off to Twegyero, and the best helmet he had was at 110k. I passed, and went to the motorcycle market. I found a place with a wall of helmets and the most comfortable one was only 78k. It seems decent enough. HJC brand.

When I first put it on to get on my scooter, I was parked under a staircase at the subway stop, and immediately cracked my head right into the cement underside of the staircase. Didn't feel a thing! So, it has already saved my life once.

It did not, however, save me from falling UP the staircase like an idiot in the subway station.

Anyhoo thanks for the advice.

And, it may be useless now. When that sort of thing happens you're supposed to send it in to the manufacturer to have it tested. It's possible you cracked it. Man, it's just not your lucky day.

Whaat? Now I know you were sent from the agency that's following me just to make me more paranoid.

If you read the manufacturer's label (or look it up in English online) it will say that any major abuse to the helmet (such as dropping it or smacking it against stairwells) should lead the user to send the helmet to the manufacturer for inspection. Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it unless you see dents or cracks.*
