				|
 |
				| My Canadian passport will expire in 3 months and my travel agent told me this will cause some travel problems if I want to visit other Asian country within that time period (or trouble on my return to Korea as I no longer have an E2 Visa)
Does anyone know when I can apply for a new passport because it seems like this could be a major pain in the ass.

 TIA

				| As soon as possible? *shrugs* I renewed mine when it was only a couple of weeks away from expiring, but I didn't travel anywhere on it for months before that. The embassy had it done in a couple of weeks. You don't have to worry about the visa. People have said you need to go to Immigration to record your new passport details after you get it, but when I went they didn't know what I was talking about and said it wasn't necessary and I didn't have any problems leaving or re-entering Korea after that. | |

				| I did mine last year in Seoul. Very easy as the people there were great. In and out of the embassy in 5 mintues. Passport delivered about 2 weeks later.
Their website will tell you all you need to have.

Your travel agent is right. Do it now. Not difficult to do.

				| I just finished. It can be done thru the mail and takes 15 working days upon their receiving the application. I found it quite stressful because they aren't responsive; didn't answer emails or phone messages re; what they were up to, how it was coming along.
Three days after they received the documents, which included the question, 'what were your job addresses for the past two years', they requested job addresses for another two years further into the past.

I asked they deliver it by a certain date about 2.5 weeks after they received the application and they came thru, just in time, the exact day before I left that address and job. So they are thorough, do it in the time they say they will, and are too busy to be bothered.

Was it a renewal, i.e. a completely new passport; or was it an extension of your then-current passport?

If it was a completely new passport, you would have to get your visa transferred etc... but if you were given an extension, tehn no, you didn't need to..

At least that is the law that I know ?

				| do it 6-9 months before it expires especially if you plan to travel in that time frame. most countries wont either issue you a visa or let you in the country with less than 6 months left on your passport | |

You cannot get an extension on a regular Canadian passport.

				| I got a new passport at the Canadian embassy about 4 years ago and the one I got wasn't machine readable. Do they give out machine readable ones nowadays? | |

Yes, the new ones are machine readable.
It currently takes 2-3 weeks to process.

 To the OP:

You can apply anytime for a new passport. You do not need to wait until it expires.

Most people apply for it when there is between 6 and 9 months validity left.

You will not be allowed to travel internationally if there is less than 6 months remaining on your passport. You will be denied boarding UNLESS you are returning to your home country.
