About time they hit this market niche. I've seen similar beers marketed in Malaysia and, I think, Vietnam. The one in Malaysia was 8% and would advertise "Gets you there faster."
Been about fifteen years since the U.S. banned high alcohol content in beers, right? And I think the makers are not even allowed to refer to alcohol content in their advertisements. Colt 45 used to be the strongest one before then, I think.
Any of you ever had the Guinness Stout that is brewed in Malaysia? It's an 8% alcohol beer. It's more bitter and a lot stronger than the standard Guinness Stout. And it has a different name: "Foreign Extra Stout" If you're ever in Malaysia or Singapore (maybe elsewhere in the region, but haven't seen it in Thailand, Hong Kong or Vietnam), give it a try. I usually bring home a couple bottles with me.
Oh, by the way, . . CASS is a local version of COORS, believe it or not. COORS did a joint development thing back in the 90's with, I believe, Jinro and later, in 1999, the CASS brand was bought up by OB. I read that when Jinro started making CASS it had only previously made soju and OB had only made beer and a kind of mutual agreement existed between them not to step on each other's toes. After Jinro came out with CASS, OB said all bets were off and came out with it "GREEN" soju. Jinro counterattacked with its "NICE" . . . and . . . . |

I'm not a big fan of very strong beer. Usually has a much sweeter taste due to the higher sugar/alcohol content. I think that in order to make a reasonable-tasting beer the limit is somewhere around 7%. In much of Europe, including Spain and Italy, the normal beer is around 5% and the "doppio malto" (double malt) beer is around 7%. Both taste fine, but the 9% beers I've tried (Fosters Super etc) have tasted more like cheap wine.
I do, however, prefer a beer of between 5-5.5% rather than the current 4.5% in Korea, so a boost of 1% wouldn't be a bad thing. |

beer with a higher alcohol content generally tastes really gross in my opinion. i've tried a pretty sizeable handful of those beers and i always end up with a hangover, and i didn't have fun drinking it to begin with.
5% seems to be the magic number. anything else tends to taste like it's been left fermenting for too long. |

| I'm glad to see Korea introducing new beers rather than just more watered down versions of watered down beers (looking at you, Coors). |

The country's second-largest brewery said it will launch the Cass Red brand with an alcohol level of 6.9 percent to meet more diverse needs of consumers.
"We want to offer more variety to consumers, as they have various drinking habits and needs, and Cass Red would be a brand extension," Chung Yong-min, head of OB's public relations division, told The Korea Herald. |
Haha, now that's just funny. Various drinking needs. Glad to see OB is lookin out for the little guy.
So, is it actually going to be a dark beer? |

| Yeah, I generally don't like high alcohol content beers. The Guinness Foreign Extra Stout brewed in Malaysia (and maybe elsewhere in S.E. Asia) is my only exception. I like a bitter, strong stout and this one fits the bill like no other I've had. |

Wrong and wrong. There are loads of stouts and IPAs in the States with high alcohol content and there always have been. Also barleywines are plentiful if you head out to Colorado, Northern California or Oregon, but I guess maybe technically they aren't beers. |

Maybe there are three reasons:
1. It's terrible, especially from the bottle.
2. It's a microbrewed beer (or so they claim, though their distribution spans the entire country and their batches are relatively large in comparison to real micros) and its distibution here would result in outrageous prices.
3. If you like Sam Adams, you're probably a Red Sox fan, and therefore deserve no happiness in your life. |

"The last time beer with higher alcohol content was introduced was in September 1991. Hite's "Stout" had 7 percent alcohol. But it failed to gain popularity, prompting the brewery to lower the content to 5 percent. "
Is Hite Stout really 5%? I thought it was more like 4%. It still tastes watery.
Anyway, I welcome this new beer. Anything has to be an improvement over what's currently out there. |

Not all high alcohol beer are too sweet. They just need loads more time to mature, and to be really heavy on hops. Then they kick some serious ass.
Oh and I didn't know malaysia had all those funky beers. Too bad I stayed on tiger the whole time I was there and did not investigate any more. Well, next time I guess. |

| Speaking of beers, wtf is up with OB blue? I normally actually like OB. Yeah, I know- but I am a pilsner fan, and OB is an average, cheap beer- not good not bad. This new ob blue though, is about the nastiest thing I have ever tasted. If any of you were at the cage last week, you know what I mean. People were literally going to whatever bartender had NOT opened uo the ob blue box yet. |

As I always say, if it ain't ale, it's just a lager and doesn't really count.
That said, I prefer a beer around 4.5-5% - as a session beer it's enough. |
