Anyone else contracted to 4:30 despite having nothing to do for about 2.5 hours? If you got out of it, how'd you do it. If not, what are you doing in the interim. |

I can usually duck out any time after 4:00 without anyone caring but I rarely do, I feel bad or something, maybe. What really gets me are the days when all of the classes are cancelled but I still have to sit here from 8:00-4:30.
...11 minutes to go! |

Its standard with public school. I don't really mind. I've been through hogwan hell, and this is a small price to pay for sanity and stability. I wouldn't consider trying to duck out early everyday b/c you look really bad to your coworkers. I will admit to playing sick a couple of times. I've found ways to fill my time though- www.tv-links.co.uk, listening to NPR, reading, knitting, screwing around on Dave's. Before I know it my 4 hours of nothing to do are nearly over. |

I'm expected to stay. It's not a bad time to gather my head at the end of the day and prep anything that might need it. And then there's Dave's... |

Yeah, I know it's a pain, but think of it this way. They're paying you to stay. I don't see what the problem is. |

Not really. We're paid monthly not hourly. |

Actually, it's both. You get a monthly salary, but in the contract, it states that it's for 40 hours a week with a maximum of 21-22 teaching hours a week. That said, if anyone wants 40 teaching hours a week, I'm sure your school would be more than happy to oblige. |

The whining about having to stay until 4:30 has got to be one of the lamest things going. How about using the time to make yourself a better teacher, to develop resources and materials, and to rewrite lesson plans? Use the time to study Korean, READ A BOOK!!!!!!!, or study something else. There's so much you could be doing. Why complain? Why waste your life?

I can usually slip out at four and just use the time to work on my MA thesis. No skin off my nose. |

I concur.
Most Koreans have to work until well after 8pm. In corporations, you aren't allowed to leave the office until after your boss leaves.
I think about 99% of all Koreans would love to have a job where they can leave at 4:30. |

Ahaha, yeah, I could be doing something productive...like getting a second job and making money.
Lesson planning...for 2 hours per day? Every week? Are you frakkin' serious? |

The divorce rate here is also 50%. Does that mean that I should strive for divorce? |
