Had a friend of mine who wanted to come and visit me. I told him don't bother I personally don't feel Korea has much to offer for Tourism. Unless you want to buy some cheap ball caps, jerseys etc...

Well....when taking your view seoul_nhl then no I would not recommend it.

But, many people see things differently....and would recommend Korea as a good place to visit.

I know my mother visited here a few times and recommended it to many of her friends and students (she is a teacher..well retired now). Many came and had a great trip.

When you teach here you see things differently. A tourist can enjoy Korean because it remains off the beaten path as far as large tourist attractions and that is a huge draw for many travellers. There are many places to visit here that are well worth it: ex: the Grotto Budha in Kyungju along with Pulgoksa Temple.

Some will of course prefer other destinations and thats cool. But, to reduce the place to cheap ball caps and jerseys is..well...a bit ridiculous (sorry there). Seoul itself has some great spots to visit....anyway..my two cents.

It depends. If they wanted to come over here, there are plenty of things to do and see. Too suggest otherwise is wrong and shows a lack of even attempting to find some things.

But, if the person was trying to decide between several places (let's say in Asia) and could not go to all of them, Korea wouldn't be on the top of my list though it wouldn't be on the bottom either. Korea does have a lot of wonderful stuff to experience. Some is right in the open, but I get the feeling people tend to miss it due to certain mindsets or personalities. There are also a lot of hidden or more difficult to find things (like any other country) too.

Before I came to teach, I came here twice as a tourist. Each time for two weeks. I loved it. It's a bit off the beaten path and not one of the signature places for North Americans to visit in Asia (Tokyo, HK, Singapore, Beijing, Thailand) but if you want to avoid the fat American/Canadian tourists and still visit a place where you can get around in English and yet still feel like you're in an Asian nation, Seoul is great.

Despite what we think, there are a billion future Chinese tourists and millions of Japanese tourists ready to fill Seoul hotel rooms.

The problem is not so much that Korea is uninteresting, it's just that there are so many more interesting countries nearby. China and Japan for starters. If I was coming to Eastern Asia for two weeks, for example, I'd recommend spending up to 7 days in China, two days in Korea, and the remaining 5 in Japan. I think that's a fair example of what there's to see and do for the average tourist around these parts.

If the person were deaf, dumb, and blind...then, yes. That way they could be absolutely sure they weren't missing anything.

I believe Patricia Shultz made a mistake when she made no entry for Korea in her book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. She should have included the DMZ.

Over the years I've had seven people come to visit me from overseas and all enjoyed their time.

If they're travelling around and they're in the "neighbourhood" already, sure, drop by. I could use a visitor. Just pop by Incheon before going back home and I'll take you around for a week or two.

But fly all this way strictly and solely for Korea alone? No way.

I'm sure my friend would enjoy it, all we would do is party and have fun. I think however, he would appreciate other less concrete countries! I know most of you might feel my opinion is a Korea bash. Well, its not. I live here and enjoy some aspects of it and hate other aspects of it. But as a tourist destination it lacks a lot too desire, unless your visiting friends, family or Korean War memorials. Thats my opinion like it or hate it.
