I mean seriously did you all live in a cave . . People complaing because Koreans won't sit next to them on the subway, some dude posting about how the foreigners don't smile at him on the street. Do you know how racist that is to begin with , the fact that someone has the same color skin as you means you have to have some kind of interaction when passing on the sidewalk. And then when your gracious nod or smile isn't returned, because actually some people have things going on in their mind while they are walking down the street and not getting in a mental stew when they see a foreigner from 50 yeards away and start debating "ok how do I handle this do I smile or do I play it cool, awww hell we're the same skin color let me smileand if the *beep* doesn't smile back I'll post about it on Dave's ESL Cafe / Bulletin Board of the small minded" then assume that all foreigners are a bunch of pricks. It's called a life look into it and stop worrying about how other people react to you and your appearance. You're not that important. Really

It's human nature that sometimes we are wrong about our perceptions about people. I've gotten some pretty dirty looks on the subway and even had one agoshi call me fat (yes I am a little heavy). I simply walked away and said nothing. Later I joked with my wife (who was with me at the time) that I should have said to him, "I may be fat, but your ugly and at least I can lose weight."

My father-in-law has never had a very high opinion of Americans, but likes me. It again proves what I've said above, people can be wrong about their perceptions.

Then again, sometimes I like to play the role of the "loud mouth" American just for fun (not rude just a little obnoxious when I'm with a few of my friends from Canadian and New Zeland).

Sure, I complain about things in Korea (even to my wife). There are things that legitimately drive me insane about living here. We all deal with things in different ways though.

it's about the same way that saying 'some of my best friends are black' makes someone not racist.

How about if a black woman sees a white guy on the street in Korea and thinks "ooh another foreigner" and says hi.... Are they racist? Confused

I had a fish in my fridge that smelled funny.

I generally like fish, but I don't like badfish.

I hate it how everybody always jumps on the guy who points out the absurdity of the majority of the complaints on the board.

Lots of stuff here is interesting, and worth reading.

But a ton of it is what I also see as small-towner complaints about the big city. It's often not Korea thats the problem, it's that posters aren't comfortable with city life.

Just my opinion. Jump away.
