I arrived this past Wednesday after a nightmarish set of flights, some of which were canceled, started working THAT DAY (after a million apologies by the director of the school), and have been working since then. Finally, first day off, and it's pouring (and I got caught in it walking the trek back from Lotte Mart).

That said, I'm in Bangi-dong, in Songpa, and I'm wondering if anyone else is, if there are any decent bars in the area, expat hangouts, and other such things. I've tried the search function, but it's more or less useless, as you all know. If it helps anyone in the area, I live right next door to a bar called Mad Dog's.

Thanks for the responses in advance, and I'm glad to finally be here.

Nope, hagwon. But by all appearances thus far, it's a darn good one to work for.

Captain Courageous, your powers are useless here. How does it feel to be a mere mortal?

I hope you're talking about your trip back from Japan, and not from home. Otherwise, you just outed yourself as an illegal worker (no E-2 yet) to everyone on this board -- and immigration, if they read this. Can't be too many foreigners at schools in your area. Shocked

It is quite easy, common and highly recommended to get your E2 visa in your home country before coming to Korea. No visa run is needed to Japan to work in Korea. Perhaps the Captain used his superior mental powers to deduce the advantage of getting his E2 before leaving home. We have no reason to suspect that he is not working legally.

Exactly, and even if he didn't why would you feel compelled to point it out in such a fashion? "HEEY, IF IMMIGGRATION EVER FOUND OUT ABOUT YOU!!! MAN, YOU'RE SCREEEEEWED!!"

Many people come here, get shoved into a classroom, then do the visa run later.

Uh, like anyone with a brain, I didn't come here until my passport had a visa firmly glued inside it.

I originally didn't. I have no brain? Thanks alot.

For some, coming here can be an impulsive choice. I arrived here 10 days after first hearing about the Korean EFL industry.

I didn't post on some Korean teachers' website for almost a year talking about "When I get there I'm gonna...", and then when I did finally show up acting like a know-it-all.

Enjoy your stay.

The last thing I would want to do is insult anyone or act like like a know-it-all. Sometimes, a little common sense here and there helps to cover your hindquarters, though.
