Hi,
I was just looking at the weight restrictions for luggage and it seems that you can now only take ONE case weighing up to 23Kg as weel as a carry on. An additional case will cost 150.00 unless you fly 1st class.
What is that all about? I'm supposed to be coming for a year not a week!!
Anyone had any recent experiences?

Unless there's only one airline coming to Korea out of one country these days, you might want to be a bit more specific. |

Don't know what's really new about it. Most airlines give you one carry on and another one or two for check-in into the belly of the beast.

ALL the airlines I have flown that are NOT going to North America allowed 2 pieces of checked luggage with a combined weight of 20-23 Kilos (depending on the airline) for passengers in economy class seats.
What airline are you flying on?
Airlines to / from North America have very different weight allowances (for those readers from there). Typically they allow 2 pieces totaling 23-32kilos per piece (weight depends on the airline). |

Here is from Northwest Airlines:
Carry-on--
Quote: |
Northwest allows you to carry one piece of luggage on board the aircraft plus a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small backpack. The carry-on luggage must be of a size and shape to allow for storage in overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of you.
Dimensions:
Cannot exceed 45 linear inches (9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches)
Note: Luggage not meeting these specifications must be checked and is subject to any applicable fees.
|
Check-in--
Quote: |
International Travel - between North America and Africa / Asia / Europe / India / Middle East)
Coach Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of checked luggage.
Each piece: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
Exceptions for trans-Pacific travel wholly between U.S./Canada and the Philippines , China and Hong Kong , checked pieces may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each.
Checked luggage within the free 2 bag allowance that weigh more than 50 pounds and up to 70 pounds will be assessed a $50.00 heavy bag fee.

I've had no problems at all. As a matter of fact, their carry-on is rather lenient, as my son even brought an electric guitar in addition to other bags. |

I should add that I am flying from the UK. It is one case (23Kg) and a hand luggage.
It used to be 2 cases (32k) and carry on.
I was wrong with one point, the cost of an extra case is 240.00 unless you fly First Class or Business Class, in which case it is free. |

Doesn't this apply to BA only? |

As of March 1st there are new rules being implemented. There is a sign on Incheon about that.
Before it was 23kg and 32kg if you go to/from US. Now its 23 alltogether. |

Other than NA routes, the Y class allowance was always 20 kg, no limit on number of checked bags, subject to a total max of 20 kg.
In that respect there is no change. |

I just left Korea for good and I had two bags. One was huge and weighed 32 kilograms. The other was pretty big as well and it weighed 10 kilos (it was supposed to be my hand luggage).
The girl at the check-in nearly had a heart attack when she weighed them. She told me I was going to have to pay 219,000 won as I was grossly overweight.
I told her I didnt have that type of money on me (It was true - I only had 70 thousand).
I did a little reshuffle of my bags and I threw out a dressing gown and three t shirts. I then went back to her and made a few jokes and she let the overweight charge slide.
The moral of the story is, it really depends on what type of person you get at check-in. If they aren't having a bad day and you are friendly enough, then you can get away with having more than you should. |

The Swindler is absolutely correct.. while I was getting screwed for being overweight (BAGS), the guy checking in right NEXT to me got his overweight bags on for free |

Agree. When I left last October I was told that London flights charge more for extra bags, so they wanted W420,000 (yes, that's right folks) and I had a mere W170,000. I threw away a few ridiculous tshirts, went to see her a few times extra times, repacked things into an extra bag...et voila it cost me (funnily enough) 169,000. She didn't even weigh my laptop bag, which was also crammed full of books and clothes. Oh, a lovely lady. |

Last year I slid right on through at the check-in counter in Incheon, 'cause the Korean guy who checked me in thought I was cute. One of my bags was waaaaay over and he told me he would let me check it for free. It all depends on who you are and who they are, their mood, etc., in MANY cases. |

That's what I was going to say - that it has always been up to 20kg for economy, 30 for biz class and 40 for first... |
