My aunt is thinking about starting up a hagwon, her only experience is me being able to teach at her hagwon and managing everything. Other than that, she has no experience in the business. She is a fair minded, calm woman. By the way, I am a gyopo with an f-4 visa, so I CAN DO WUTEVER I WANT. She is looking for new locations around the Gwangju city area. The hagwon is around 47 pyong in a newly constructed builing. She is going to pay 50,000,000 won down payment and an additonal 1,100,00 won a month as rent, if we choose that location . But that is all relative depending on where you live. Seoul will obviously cost a lot more and the location is another variable factor. Forget all that. My question is: in a new building, completely empty (no walls,desks, doors, etc) how much will you need to start everything up, minus rent and key money (considering that is relative) . .

wut to consider when thinking of an estimate:

- interior design (walls, paint, electrical wiring, lights, doors, a/c, heater)
- copier, printer, computer
- big sign on the outside
- materials (books)
- desks, chairs, whiteboard
- advertising
- renting bus/car to p/u students

Am i missing anything else?

I think aside from key money and rent, one would need atleast an additional 45,000,000 won. Remember that money is a factor and trying to spend reasonable amount of money without being too lavish!

A lot of directors who have no skills in english, no common sense, and lacking business sense can manage to make a comfortable living running a hagwon, I figure, I can do better ... So wut do you think?

By the way, wut part of "I can do wutever I want," didn't you understand?????????????????????????????????????????? I can even spell "what" as "wut" cause i got an F4 visa. How you like them apples???

I think I would be a pretty cool director as far as directing goes considering wut an unreasonable as s they can be. But in this case, Im not the one starting crap, making stupid corrections, on my serious questions. Am i asking for a spelling check?

Don't forget; on opening day, you have to hire two HOT, scantily clad Korean chicks to dance (to obnoxiously loud music, while speaking through a blurry mic) on the sidewalk. Always makes my day.
Oh, and you can't go wrong with a few of those Gumby-looking figures, with fans underneath that cause them to flap about.

But seriously, you've got to take staff into consideration. I honestly think that a lot of hagwon owners have this perception that students will instantly flock in and the staff salaries will be covered. Things may be very slow from the get-go; you should have enough money to cover staff salaries for, at least, the first few months. If you plan on having foreign teachers, this will be a BIG expense... plan accordingly.

You want people to take you seriously, present yourself accordingly.

oh man ... in the beginning, the staff's salary would be the cheapest expense, i would imagine that wouldn't be the problem ... the way i see it, the directors' who don't pay the teachers on time have an issue, either with the teacher on hand or himself ... you gotta pay the employees on time !!!
