|
|
| My boyfriend and I have our first vacation coming up in April, and we are thinking of going to Jeju Island. We are very interested in hiking, and I know that there is that inactive volcano and lava tunnels, so we hike there. Also, I know there is that mountain in the center of the island. But other than the "honeymoon" things to do, which we don't want to do, can anyone recommend to me anything interesting they did when they were there? Maybe things less popular? Or off the beaten path activities? Thanks! |

if you want free accommodations on Jeju let me know I know a English Love to practice MiddleSchool Principal who wanted me to visit him... but he also wanted to visit me later in America... I recommend you rent a bike and ride around "Cow Island" ummm what is the name Udo maybe... Also if you have a bit of a waht shall we say cultural intrest you can see how Koreans deal with sex at "Love Land" (lots of posts / pictures on that) Ummm the Rocks on the south by the Expo Center are unique mmm thisng it is close to Seogwipo what is the name JUngmun? I recommend HypoJae err sounds like 'Hop Jay' beach. I saw the lava tubes and they were mildly interesting I guess.... Also ahhh there is said to be a all Nutmeg Forest with only umm mostly Nutmeg trees... I went MTB riding with the Jeju Halla Cycle Club on some trials that were ahhh nature like but a bit of a let down as they were half fire road / half badly paved. But you can hike up and around Mount Halla I think too...\

[the above TO see How I Crushed ALL The Unread English Serfs And Brought a Intelectual Rennasance to Jeju - now since decaying due to my Triumpahnt Withdraw - Not Defeated I Left With Their Gold}
Great POwer was MIne The Roads of Jeju Were Their Lord's Alone - Woe to the Fools Who dared Pass me On the Down Hills For I would Catch them And Taunt them in Cruel Jests as I blew by the Car Clowns at 50 Miles an Hour (Did I mention I was Da Strongest on Jeju -C00l)
However, In Sooth Jeju has anon fallen into Disgrace and *beep* Worship Idols still abound (this is a fact I did not believe at first but the stone Grand fathers were *beep* Fertile type Idols) For the Jeju Prince - Mine Own Noble Self - Hast long ago left behind the Smoking Ruins of that Fief - Though I crushed many lips together in foul spoken English Curse yet still they would deny my Divine Right to Take WHAT IS MINE BY THE KING. UHER bade me Go and Teach these Urchin eaters the Proper way Of the English... But hey resisted me to the last and now all that is left of their city is tin covered hovels and over blazoned Pc Bangs. My Swerd Durendal is broken and my spear lies split. Despite the best Of my Destier's Charges they refused to yield and continued to mutter in their Bar-Bar Chirping. Would that I could save the young alone and expel the rest to the Peat bogs... mmm well don't think they have bogs- my I Should have Chained them on Ships Carried to the Heath wherein those Peat stinking Bog trotters Of the Celt Lands could have used them... |

If you enjoy hiking i think you will have a good time, although depending on where you are staying you might want to hire a car to get around in.
I was there last year for a conference and my colleagues continually told me how Jeju was famous for 3 things, the wind, the rocks and strong women.
On the 4th day there yet another colleague asked me if i knew what Jeju was for by this time i was an expert and informed him of the 3 things. I was surprised when the conversation continued as follows.
Him: And there is a fourth, small whores.
Me: Small whores??? (Nearly choked on my breakfast)
Him: Yes, lots of small whores...kind of like ponies.
Me: Ahh...got you!!
So please try to take pictures of the Small whores or small horses...whichever you prefer! |

that's a hilarious story. I would have been like "But there are small whores all over the peninsula." |

I definitely recommend renting a car. It makes it nice and convenient to get around. The resort of Jungmun has some decent places to stay and the beach there is very nice. The main hiking spot on the island is Halla National Park. There are plenty of trail but its not always possible to hike to the peak. They will let you know at the entrance if that hike is open.
For a fun, off the wall park to visit, I recommend LoveLand. Its only 10 minutes from the airport and only takes about 50 minutes to walk through (including time to take plenty of pics). http://www.jejuloveland.com/
The Toad lived on the island and while I didnt read his post he probably mentioned most of the main spots to visit.
There is also another little park about 40 minutes from the airport, I cant remember the name but it starts with an M. Its a collection of unusual rocks and stones but its a nice way to spend a few hours the day you plan to catch your plane back. There is a authentic harubang in the park as well. |

| I took a 4 day vacation there last week and had a great time. I hiked Hallasan in the center of the island. It takes most of the day, and you have to start before 9 AM if you want to go all the way to the top. Definitely worth it, though. I also saw the waterfalls, beaches, and rock formations on the southern coast, watched the sunrise from Sunrise Peak (Seongsan Ilchulbong), and took the ferry out to Udo. I'll definitely go back. I didn't rent a car and got around just fine, but a car would definitely make some things more accessible. |

Yes, definitely if you wanna get off the beaten path. I paid 130,000 won for 48 hours with no mileage and cheap LPG fuel.
I recommend you start in Jeju-si, the biggest community, and head westward to Halim caves and park and beach, then stay close to the coast and head to the northwest edge of the island for some very nice wave crashing, huge surf, nice cliff sights, then down the west coast. Then do whatever, but make sure you make it to the easternmost area, with the horses in the fields, and pay for entrance to the cliff and park area, worth it. Then along northeast coast back toward Jeju-si, some nice little beaches and pleasant drive.
Good luck whatever. |

yeah, get a car. the one we rented had a GPS system that told us when we were coming up on traffic cameras and that we should slow down!!!
i think most natives see the stoplights as 'suggestions'. |

| If you have a car and take the time to follow the lesser-traveled roads and attractions, plus if you make efforts to get out of the car and hoof it, you'll find places on Jejudo where you'll see no one else. These are often the best spots on the island (and on Udo). |
