I know that this subject has been covered many many times in the past, but truthfully I haven't the time or inclination to do a search today.
It sends a shiver down my spine every time I see some ejit holding their baby or toddler in their lap whilst driving. I saw a toddler in the front seat at the weekend with the seat belt across his face. I am truly lost for words when I see this obscene action taking place, and I am rarely lost for words!
So every time some ones tries to convince you that "it's OK we won't crash" or "it's because we love our child" please show them this and educate them, just a little!!

Yeah. I'm having a kid in a few months and I just know there are some times when I'm gonna go ape-shiat on the mother in law about safety stuff. I'm honestly gonna be worried any time I leave my kid with her. My wife, fortunately is very western-minded and I've been continually reminding her of some of our safety standards that I expect to be upheld. |

Yeah, then again you know how before when we were growing up there were no child seats, people would drink beer and drive their cars (not binge drinking but like coke so its under the limit - dunno why is this illegal in US now - sucks!!!!). And we are all alive and well.
Of course, baby should be protected otherwise...we saw the video |

Not trying to be an apologist, just linking pictures from the good old days before Britney declared herself the anti-Christ.

I agree. I'm often speechless at the lack of parental responsibility here. Koreans must have a difficult time when they move to the west.
Kid not in safety seat. Huge fine. Visits by child welfare.
Go through a red light. $300 ticket.
Go down one way street in wrong direction. Lose license.
Drive on the sidewalk. Death by enraged mob.
I swear. Koreans must receive thousands of dollors in traffic fines in their first month in the West. And rightly so. This is the most lawless society I've ever visited. When that lawlessness leads to the death of children its obscene. Korea has the highest rate of child auto fatakities in the OECD. Yet they continue with their pathetic ways.
I'll never figure this hole out. |

Well, if your driving experience is the one from rural Connecticut where old money lives, then yes, driving in Korea is lawless.
But there is a "system" here like everywhere else - you just have to get used to it.
Did you ever drive in Paris, Italy, Turkey, Middle east, Balkans? |

The difference RT, is that many Americans were outraged by this photo, and it became big news.
In Korea, you see it every day.
That being said, 30 years ago in the US, a great many people were riding like this with their kids. I used to see kids on motorcycle gas tanks in the US about 30 years ago, as well. Not anymore. Americans also smoked a lot.
Then many people died from the above situations.
Korea just has some catching-up to do (and sadly, it will take a lot of deaths to do it).
I don't recall ever seeing such interesting barber shops in the States, however. |

I know for a fact that in most western nations the act of not having your child properly restrained in a motor vehicle constitutes a form a child abuse and wreckless endangerment. I understand and appreciate that here is not the west and things are DONE differently, but when it comes to the safety of children, who are fully dependent on their parents to keep them out of harms way. There is no excuse not to utilise modern safety devices that are readily available, over that of continuing to apply the same safety modes when riding a horse and trap/cart. |

I totally agree with you.
I just think that if the birthrate is dropping so much, that people would take care to protect their kids from harm.
Doesn't every little Kim count?? |

I think Koreans suck as parents full stop. If parents took their kids out until all hours drinking in Australia, welfare would soon be knocking on the door. How often have the rest of you seen this? |

I can't say I've seen a huge number of parents interacting with their kids, but in the families I'm close to, the kids rule the roost, no question. It's as if the parents are taking orders from them,
i.e., my child is severely constipated because she won't eat anything but white bread and ice cream
or
I know he's eaten nothing but sugar all afternoon, but he *wants* more candy
or
I know it's not safe for him to be riding unbelted in the front seat *while holding a candy on a very sharp stick* but if I take it away, he'll scream
The friend who said these things is no pushover-- in fact, she's a tigress, but her attitude toward her kids is amazing. |
