Hello!
I am new to this site and found it when I was looking for advice on where to seek medical attention. I saw a doctor in February and had missed work for one day for this appt (previously excused from work for this), I paid out of pocket. I am a healthy female but did have some labs return as slightly abnormal - nothing that will affect me for a number of years if ever. My employer is now wanting me to produce a doctor's note from my visit stating I had an appt that day (for accountability of where I was), that I am healthy plus that my labs were okay (since that is what I told them). I sought informal legal advice regarding this requirement and was informed I must produce a medical note (due to my employer being government). I don't consider my medical situation to be any of my employer's business (I had sought genetic counseling given my family history of many cancers). My opinion is it's not the government's business (more specifically, it's not my boss's business although he has taken a great interest in this now - he's an American jerk and out to eat me alive).
I'm not sure I can go back and explain what I want from the clinic I went to and get a note that is not revealing (ie states I had my appt, my labs were normal and that I am healthy). Now I'm considering trying to get a false medical note. Does anybody know of anybody who can help? Does anybody personally know a doctor I can explain my situation to that might be able to help? I'm willing again to pay out of pocket for anything. I'm also considering just going to an international clinic and letting them run a pregnancy test or something and then asking for a note that says something along the lines of "She was seen in Feb for medical appt to discuss labs, seen today for follow up, labs okay, healthy female". But then I also thought a small community clinic might be a better choice as less people would speak English in case my American boss called the clinic requesting more information (he could always find someone who speaks whatever language tho).
Any thoughts or advice? I consider the whole situation ridiculous but feel very strongly my genetics labs are not my boss's business. As it's been made into such a big deal I produce a note, at this point, I'd even be willing to pay a few bucks for a forged note stating I was seen and am healthy.
Please email me at [email protected] if you have any ideas on how I can get a doctor's or clinic's note that states I had an appt in Feb, labs are okay and I am healthy. Any help would be appreciated!! And I probably need to produce this early next week. I'm now wishing I had some shady Korean friends!
Thank you! |

If you have a contract as a teacher with a public school, as stated in your contract, you are only required to produce a doctor's note if your medical leave was for more than 7 calendar days.
Tell him to read the contract and quit bothering you or he can accept your 30 days notice and you will work for the next school district down the road.
I can assure you than they are looking for teachers and he won't want to try to explain to his boss why you quit and moved to the next school down the road (especially if it is in the same district). |

This doesn't sound right at all. You must be leaving out the fact that you missed two weeks plus of work.
If you only missed one day, you do not need a note. If your employer wants it, because he doesn't believe you, you could just have him deduct that day from your pay and call it good (your medical "secret" remains a secret for the modest price of a days pay).

Your medical stuff is really none of his business.Refer him to your contract.
If he wants to push it he can pay for you to have a full check-up to certify that you are 'fit'-the details of which are none of his business. |

| Why not just have your employer write down what they want in Hanguel and take that to the clinic? Or is there more to the story? |

Your BOSS is American?
To the other posters...if this is the case, I don't think she's a teacher in a public school anyway so maybe her contract is different. |

I'd tell him to fly a kite if he tried any deductions...they can't do that. But like I said, I don't think she's a public school teacher, not with an American boss. |

If she's in a Korean company don't they get 1 day per month as leave for chick's stuff?(though rarely taken)
If it's an American company,I don't think his stuff would fly anyway, would it? |

| Yes, (You don't have to be a chick) I work for a Korean company and I get (although I won't take it) one personal day for every thirty days worked. |

Great advice. If privacy on this matter is really important, pay back the day and let the matter rest. On a side note, seeing as how privacy tends to be important for us waygook-in, care to tell us where you're working so future potential employees will have a heads up? |

I work for a Korean company and we are (allegedly) ineligible for those personal days because we are contract employees. And, I am female (and I also wouldn't take it if it were available).
In fact, this year we are allowed no sick days whatsoever. Any missed work day comes from vacation or you lose pay for that day.
To the OP, you should be able to prove you were at the doctor by showing a receipt, which probably wouldn't specifically mention what you were there for. If the office speaks good English, or you know a Korean friend, try that. Your employer has no right to know why you went to the doctor beyond that, although that won't stop someone from asking. When we start work at my company, we all have to take blood and urine tests, as well as a whole slew of other tests. The results are sent to the company and we don't even see them.
You should accept the lost pay or give your employer the test results. Unless your contract specifies some sort of health check upon hiring (as mine does), you shouldn't have to prove you're healthy. |

| My last hogwan tried that old you need a note to miss one day of work if you are sick. I called in sick one day and I was told when I returned I had roughly a week to get a doctors note. They didn't take to kindly to my assertion that I was simply unable to go to the doctor as I didn't have the medical insurance they had promised me multiple times. After that they shut up and left me alone. I got my medical insurance card about a week later also. |
