Is it possible to do a Visa run in Canada? Not quitting the job, just leaving by legal means (with a letter of release), and switching to different employer later in the year.

Anyone every dones this? If you have any advice would be appreciated.

How do you think Canadians get here? Fly to Japan first? Of course you can get it done in Canada. Go to the consulate or embassy and get it done.

Got mine done in Vancouver a couple times. Pretty standard practice for those coming from overseas not at the last minute.

Thanks for the input and the advice.

One final question, what happens to my ARC? I'm switching employers and will be moving to a new house. Do I keep the same one and just change the address? Or do I hand in my old one, and then get a new one when I return to Korea or do I get one before I leave?

Just puzzled, curious, and wanting to prevent fires before they happen.

Cheers,

IIRC, there are only three jurisdictional areas (for the Korean embassy) in Canada for getting a Korean visa. What I mean is that all visa requests go to one of three cities. I think it was Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver (can't remember). If you are doing it by post/courier, then it isn't a problem. But if you want to do it in person you might have a long drive if you are staying in, say, Moose Jaw. It's just a consideration.

peace,

The Korean consulate in Montreal also issues visas.

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty close to Toronto, so it isn't a problem to get things done there.

My question was what happens to my ARC card. I can't seem to get a clear answer on this. Do I keep the same one or do I need to surrender mine and get a new one later?

If you have finished a job and are not 'renewing' (or going on holiday), Immigration will (or should) take your ARC when you leave the country. Sometimes the officer will forget to, but that's their problem not yours.

This may or may not be help, but our coworker left our school in December, although he'd finished his contract. He went home and hung out for two months and now he's back again. He just went through the same process of getting a visa that he did the first time. He went up to Ottawa and applied for it, etc. He doesn't have an ARC card as of the present moment and is waiting to get a new one.

Hi everyone:

Thanks for the advice.

So let me see if I have this correct. After my 30 day notice is over, I go to immigration, hand in my ARC card, show them my letter of release, and they cancel my visa, correct? Then I go home for a few weeks, get my new visa at the Korean embassy in Toronto, fly back to Korea, and then go back to Korean immigration to get my new ARC and any other stamps/stickers I need.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers,
SeoulnPepe

You turn in your ARC at the passport control counter at the airport when they stamp your passport outbound. Failure to do so CAN result in a fine of 100k won.

You get a new ARC after you get your new visa and re-enter Korea.

Keep the copy of your LOR "just-in-case"

Thank ttompatz. It helps to know what to do ahead of time. I'll remember to keep a copy of my LOR "just in case".

Immigration never took my ARC at the airport. I left a few days before the date on my visa, and said I was still coming back. Anyway, it's no big deal getting it done again if you come back.
