Just wondering from those experienced ESL teachers which is the better choice just in general to live and work in? Seoul or Jeju?
I am a first timer, married, Canadian. |

"Cohiba's Rule"
Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogenous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: brown bread, good beer, bars with good
tunes, English book stores etc.
Remember the FFF RULE. FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.
I, unfortunately, live in Inchon where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know! |

Yeah, I would totally agree with what others have said about living in Seoul. Its SOO much more fun. Living anywhere else in Korea except maybe Busan is begging for social isolation and boredom.
However, if you like nature things such as hiking and beaches, Jeju is far above Seoul. Clean air, too... Jeju will seem alot more like someplace in Canada whereas Seoul can be complete urban cluster shock the moment you arrive.
If youre married and you get along with your spouse, social isolation factor diminishes by 4 (so whereas its 100 in the countryside living alone, its 25 living with spouse or GF).
Jeju DOES have 1 or 2 decent bars, unlike most of the rest of Korean countryside.
Finally, there are alot of Canadians in Jeju, and they seem to have a pretty close click going so it would be easier for you to fit in there as compared to alot of other places in Korea. |

thanks for all your replies. i must say that my husband and i aren't big party-ers, or bar hoppers. we do enjoy the occasional drink and going to events, movies, festivals, etc. so maybe this will change your suggestions... |

Jeju City, Seogwipo City and Shin Jeju City are okay places in which to reside.
How does a fork nut like Rochie know this stuff? Well, I lived in Shin Jeju City and Jeju City; Seogwipo City info - tons of it, BTW - was totally second hand but from reliable sources (Canuckleheads who seemed very cool).
Roch on, Dudette/Dude.
