I would argue that a noticable undercurrent of fatalism exists deep in the Korean psyche, and that modern rapid change has been an attempt to overcome / erase this tendancy.
What do YOU think? Give reasons.

Yeah, I think you're right that there is a certain fatalism among many Koreans. Maybe the perpetual state of near-war, the grinding poverty through the 50's and 60's, and the onslaught (despite their new relative wealth) of various industrial diseases has kind of bummed them out a bit. It stands to reason that they worry a little less about how many laps they'll be able to swim at 80, and worry more about RIGHT NOW, and the future be damned.
I figure the rapid modernization was initiated to counter-act these realities; but in the short term anyways, the fatalistic tendencies (and unfortunate truths of their situation) continue. Now, though, a rising longevity, and viagra, might help people slow down a bit and smoke less and plan on being around into their 80's.
