So I walk into class today and this kid (middle school) has two black eyes and he's all poofy so I'm all "Yeah, yeah what's the deal" and it turns out that he got jumped in the bathroom and beat to a bloody pulp. Final answer: fractured nose, fractured cheek bone. Metal plate to be inserted into both.
So I asked what the ramifications for the perpetrators were and he said one of the 8 guys that KICKED HIS ASS got sent to another school and nothing happened to the rest. I said "What are you gonna do about it" and he said "What can I do? If I avoid them they will hunt me. If I say something to the teacher they will fight me outside school. Basically, I'm FUBAR." That was the gist of it.
Damn. If these kids ever get access to guns or knives....you do not want to be around. Columbine? Give me a f*cking break. That was just some kids having fun. These kids are set to blow.
Oh, and by the way this kid isn't a pipsqueek (I could kick his ass, but a lot of you wasters would have a hard time of it I'm sure).
Endemic school violence. Another reason to love Korea.
If you don't believe me about how serious the problem is, A) open your goddam eyes and/or B) read the goddam newspaper. |

DAMN!
Sounds like he should get one of those free bodyguards that the government allegedly will pay for for school kids....Not that that will really solve the underlying problems...
Damn...if I was his mom I'd want them tossed in jail and want their parents' money. That is so fucked up...
I'm from NYC and went to school in Brooklyn and I would have to say that a beating that bad AT SCHOOL would end with someone's ass in JAIL....

Is this school's in the Seoul area or outside of Seoul?
I've heard it's growing into a really serious problem in some parts to the point that students are getting personal bodyguards.
I'm glad it's not a problem at my school (yet...) |

I don't know how this problem is endemic to Korea. All the high schools I knew of in Toronto had some kind of gang violence and bullying. There was even a kid that got beat to death over cigarettes.
I teach in a pretty ghetto high school here and there are occasional fights, but nothing compared to the high school that I went to. I'm sure some schools in the States have it much worse. |

Very misleading title sir. Not at all what I expected to be in discussion.
That said, its terrible the crap people put up with here. We all know though what it will take to fix this problem. Someone will have to die in a horrible manner and the international press will have to shame this country into doing something, other than bodyguards, duh. |

Already happened, and this sort of thing doesn't make the international press unfortunately.

In Seoul. At a middle school.

Sure, there's bullying everywhere. But there's bullying, and then there's bullying. Stealing someone's lunch money, shoving their books onto the floor, the occasional cold-clock; those things have been happening everywhere, forever. On the other hand, it's reached such egregious proportions here in Korea that you read about it in the papers every other goddam day and kids are dying. Mostly they're offing themselves.
Also, gangs usually target other gangs. If some poor random fool takes one in the junk it's because he didn't get out of the way fast enough. |

Sadly we have a guy who does job it is to monitor the hall ways and a teacher stands outside by the gate till the majority of students have left.
Feminists please feel free to have a go at me but in my class the rule is you don't hit girls. And girls it is not the action of a lady to hit a man. In otherwords no hitting.
I call my students ladies and gentlemen cuz half the time I can't read their names or forgot.

Expats who come here, talk about how bad kids back home are, and think everything is hunky dory with Korean students obviously have rose-coloured blinders on their eyes.
Bullying is very, very bad, and the girls are worse than the boys. I don't know if it's worse than the west, but if a kid gets hurt or kills himself in Canada for whatever reason, there is major soul-searching in the community. |

Yeah, I remember some of my kids telling me about an epic school fight with pipes and bricks. They even pointed out the location like it was a friggin' legend or something.
Anyway, I was in Gecko's yesterday and saw in the paper how some moms were wearing police uniforms and escorting their kids to school.
another thing that's becoming a problem is arbitrary bullying, I forget the korean word for it, but they'll take, literally one kid, and make them a pariah, and if the teacher intervenes, then suddenly they'll hate the teacher too.
Yeah, Mack's right, I can see Korean kids being set to blow their little Hagwon addled tops. |
