Considering how little of their GDP it comprises, why are Koreans worried about the entrance of American beef, as opposed to say--- duty free American cars?
Is there something obvious I'm missing? |

In my opinion, it's because most Koreans are, as I've seen so eloquently stated on this board several times "only one generation from the plow" and in Korea's heart of hearts it is still a farmer's country. I believe someone also referred to people in Seoul as "farmers in suits."
It's been the rice farmers for a while, now it's beef...just a lot of sentiment attached to the agricultural industry. |

Because they haven't learned the meaning of 'comparative advantage' and 'quid pro quo' (as per reciprocal entry for foreign goods into their market). That and the deluded belief in the superiority of anything Korean. |
