No, I'm not asking for a 'white list'. I want to hear the advices you would give to a korean adult who wants to attend a hogwon.
Are the major institutes good or bad compared to small(local) ones? In your opinion, what is the characteristics of a good school from a student point of view? |

The best thing to do is find a job you might like then ask about the reputation of the hagwon on this and other ESL forums. Meanwhile ask for the EMail addresses of other foreign teachers at the institute and ask them what it is like. Ask many questions, seek many opinions, then, finally, trust your own instincts.

The key to happy and fruitful employment as a language instructor in Korea is to be employed by a reputable school and to negotiate a well-written contract before leaving the U.S. We advise anyone considering accepting an English teaching job in Korea to carefully review the terms of the contract regarding working and living conditions. It would also be useful to ask for references from persons familiar with the institution, especially American former employees. |

It's difficult for a teacher to give a student good advice on finding the right hagwon. My advice would be to seek out other students whose English skills are comparable to yours, and ask them if they have had a good experience at any local hagwon. If no one you know can recommend a school, you may have to take a risk. Some schools will let you sit in a class one time before you have to pay -- try those schools before you give your money to anyone.
Also, I suspect that adult-only institutes (as opposed to hagwons which offer a few adult classes "on the side") may provide the best adult-oriented teaching. But I don't really know...
Good luck! |
